Hitachi ED-A100 Lens door error and door won't close.

We have two, both eight years old. They're in seldom used areas though, so they've not actually done much mileage.

 

Potentially they may stop using these areas altogether, so I'm loathe to spend anything beyond repairs money on them right now.

 

Got ya. We had one like that once - an Epson projector which had long outlived it's projected lifespan. When me and another tech did some investigation, it turns out because the teacher literally switched it on about once a week for 10x mins, then turned it off. Mystery solved.

First off i detest working on there projectors as they seem cheaply made. This one was just out for a clean & new lamp, picture was hardly visible in a pitch black room. As I was stripping it down I snapped the plastic cog that drives the lid so my fault my replacement. First tried fix cog with superglue and tape as seen on the mirror lid in the picture which worked for short period then failed again. Ordered replacement from ebay for £25 replaced and now working perfectly. Polarizers seemed scorched so had to scrub with abrasive cloth and liquid soap which eventually came clear. Half a bucket of dust was blown out and the optical engine was cleaned with ethanol. Picture now is a world apart from original as seen. This took 2 weeks and 5 strip downs to get it right which in the real world is not worth it( as cheap to buy new projector) unless staff members are willing to do it themselves, there are plenty of instructional videos on youtube. As I get a lot of work from this school I don't mind charging for a clean & new lamp but overall these particular projectors just aren't worth the hassle.

If it cost £1000 when new that's roughly £111 a year at roughly a £10 a month - it's now costing more in labour, parts and time per hour than the device is now worth. The return isn't worth it for "production" use. As a personal challenge, if you've got the time - go for it. E.g. I've a UPS that is 17x years old and one that is 6x years old and both have failed (no surprise there). I'm simply going to request new units for both with an estimated lifespan of 5x years and maybe 2-3 battery swaps during that time. It's cheap insurance.

 

Ours did about 5-6x years before we started to have this issue - we lucked out and got 3x I think changed under the extended warranty, after that it was swaps for brand new ones. However the image quality was already deteriorating on them despite new bulbs etc so I think they got their monies worth.
