witch Posted September 30, 2011 Posted September 30, 2011 Just had a Meru network installed and initially there were big problems when all 32 netbooks tried to logon at once. It was discovered that there is a HUGE spike of interference on channel 6 which makes it not useable. We have moved down to a different channel and all is well. BUT can anyone suggest what might be causing it? We have no systems that put out any sort of wireless signal. I would really like to know!
pshuttle Posted September 30, 2011 Posted September 30, 2011 Could be anything, even interference from a dodgy power supply. I used to work for a Telco and we were once contacted by OFCOM because some BBC customers had been complaining of very poor reception in the local area around a telephone exchange. It turned out to be one of our 12volt plug-in power supplies to an SDSL modem! Neither us nor the OFCOM guy could believe it, but sure enough unplugging it caused the spike in interference to disappear completely.

Brpilot99 Posted September 30, 2011 Posted September 30, 2011 We had the same problem ... channel 6 was unusable in one area of the school so switched to another and all was well ... I still dont know what was the source even trying in the evening when most of the school was shut down .....
witch Posted September 30, 2011 Author Posted September 30, 2011 I did wonder about the alarm - but why would it be putting out wireless signals? THE PIRs certainly don't. Interesting that BRpilot99, who works in a school with the same LA I believe, had the same problem - so maybe it is something like the alarm or the heating regulation system or something - I would love to know

andy_nic Posted September 30, 2011 Posted September 30, 2011 Motion sensors (well certain models) can also emit on channel 6 we had to swap wireless to another channel fixed the problem for us. We bought a WiSpy Spectrum Analyser and put something in front of the sensors and the interference seemed to be a lot less.

paulfinlay Posted September 30, 2011 Posted September 30, 2011 Another vote for the motion detectors, i've seen this issue at a number of sites. They put out a constant signal between channels 8 and 9 which interfers with both channels 6 and 11. Only way to check for sure is a spectrum analyser like metageeks wispy.

Got them in on Monday with an anyliser so will mention that to them. Ours is a Ruckus network, can we stop it using channels 6-8? We have a door system that uses wireless as well as an alarm system so could be that.
