Disabling shut down?

We are running a Windows Server 2003 domain with XP clients. I am fed up of PCs being shut down by staff and student, meaning we can't do maintenance and roll out software etc. Is there anyway I can disable shut down? Also, the popular method for shutting down the PC is pressing the power button on the PC. Can I change the setting of the power button to reboot the PC as opposed to shut it down so that the PC will always at least come back online. Don't mind reboots, but can't stand shut downs!

Yes there is but sadly if you get rid of shut downs you also cant reboot

I would seriously look at using WOL to boot machines up for maintenance, it along with RDP access for IT can really save huge amounts of time.

Agree, there is a GPO to disable the power button in 2008 r2 but I'm sure it doesn't stop people holding the button in for 7 seconds an forcing a shutdown.

cant you set the energy or power save settings so that when the power button is pressed it restarts or does something else ?

Just disable the shutdown option in group policy - did this at my last place, simples

Can you do it ont he user level compared to machine so it can be done at the login screen?

Also dont forget what the power button does these can be set in gpo under I think its power management.
