localzuk Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 Err, those big flying ones, they be queens. Queens (and other royal pests) can be discouraged by strategic placement of papperatzi. Not all of them - they are a mix of male and female.

witch Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 This is really weird -just been outside and we have more flying ants - just in the last hour. I don't think I have ever seen more than one flying ant day- especially separated by several weeks - has anyone else?
Sirbendy Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 Mmm, we had them last night too...mildly annoying, they were disturbing my contemplation of life while watching my eco-lawnmowers working (rabbit and guinea pig). I thought little of it until I realised one patch of short grass was heaving with them. Took a wander in the house, brought out Roomba, set up a perimeter round the affected patch and left Roomba to it. Good fun with a technical bent to it.
fafster Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 A good reason to encourage birds into your gardens. If you have food and water available throughout the year, the birds will be on hand to munch on the pests when they appear.
Ste_Harve Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 Well I got in last night to find the patio covered in thousands of ants, they're under a few flags and i've got 3 ant hills in the lawn that I hit with the mower and you should have seen the amount that came pouring out of them. I want rid of them as they irritate the dog, and the baby plays on the grass and the missus just doesn't like them. I lifted flag and poured about 10 litres of boiling water into it. Then about 2 foot over loads of flying ants started to emerge from another hole. Going to get some powder to put down under flags. I ended up putting the sprinkler on for about 5 hours to give it all a good soaking, was beneficial to the grass at the same time!!

We went for a walk through some sand dunes and there must have been eleventy bazillion of them out at once. Some bit me, and half of them ended up down my T shirt. I was wearing shorts but seemed to escape the nastier possibilities that such a garment affords a flying insect. They ruined the walk. Edited July 27, 2012 by jinnantonnixx
6Foot2 Posted August 8, 2012 Posted August 8, 2012 We have flying ants here today [Hertfordshire] The ants here are quite small [smaller than I recall from when I much younger] I don't know the particular variety that are out and about at the moment but I suspect that we may have more than one 'event' Apparently it is also a bad day for them elsewhere. Get ready!

featured_spectre Posted August 9, 2012 Posted August 9, 2012 From my new found gardening experience...if you find a nest, small quantities of cement dust does the trick. The ants bring it back to the colony for the queen, and effectively cement the queen and eggs preventing them from making a new queen. Also with red ants nests...rake them with a metal/hard rake. do it daily. the disruption to the nest on a daily basis makes the ants move and very quickly. Found it takes about 3 days before they start moving.

timbo343 Posted August 1, 2015 Posted August 1, 2015 I went to the bottom of the garden, about 6-7m from house and turned over 6 bricks qhich had been put on soil about 2 weeks ago. We found ant eggs, ants and flying ants. Salt and vineger put on patch of soil (nothing is growing in this bit and is going to be covered with lining and gravel soon). Got some raid ant killer on yhat patch now so fingers crossed they'll die.
john Posted August 2, 2015 Posted August 2, 2015 Where I live has been crawling with them, between the flying ants and the mass influx of seagulls the residents forum has been crazy! Makes a change from the Mosquito's from the water features So many bugs for a city its not fun at times.
CAM Posted August 3, 2015 Posted August 3, 2015 I saw them in Thurrock at the racetrack on Friday. Thankfully as the sun goes down the flying ants disappeared. Not had the invasion at home yet, plenty of swarms on the pavement though. Not looking forwards to it as the owner of a longhaired cat who sits on the nest then comes back indoors...

For us it's usually a humid day in July. We maybe get one or two more days later in the month... different species of ant perhaps?

mikeprice Posted July 28, 2019 Posted July 28, 2019 found a few flying ants here a few days ago - right next to the house so I sprayed them after closing all the windows near there - seems to have got rid of them - I have left the more distant ones alone - but as there were only a few I don't think is the proper day I don't think any more will come out today - not unless they bring umbrellas!
