Joomla or Wordpress - and pros/cons of both.

What do you prefer?

Looking at moving to CMS for new site, but unsure of which one to use.

Wordpress for my own sites as it's simple to use and has lots of easy to use useful plugins.

 

Joomla just takes more work.

WordPress is for blogs, Joomla is rubbish (IMO).

 

I favour CMS Made Simple at the moment.

Wordpress for simplicity - Joomla always seemed to have more power and depth to me, the depth of add-ons and plugins is also impressive. I also found that it took a lot of work to create a site in Wordpress that doesn't look like a blog.

For easy submission I think wordpress is great and combining that with pages you can build structure that way.

currently i use joomla... as someone mentioned before it is only good for extensions.. and how about magento? is that any good? im about to give it a go but if its even worse than joomla i will not bother

Thanks. It currently runs on Wolf CMS with bits of custom PHP code, but I'm hoping to update it over the summer, running on CMS Made Simple. It's expanding more than what I want the current system to cope with

wordpress for blogs. joomla for main website

I think it depends on what you want to get out of it. I have both setup for my personal sites and develop extentions for both (in my spare time).

 

Wordpress is a blogging site with simple updates and some good extentions to add functionality. It can take a bit to re-jig the code to make it not look like a blog but it depends on what you want the site to look like. It's easy to use for multiple users to submit stuff and get things on their fast.

 

Joomla is a very powerful CMS which can be it's downfall. With a big API and huge extention directory, it can take some time getting used to it. It took me a week or so to understand how the templates work to make my own. Out of the box though it gives good functionality and some minor tweaking can get a site up and running in no time.

 

Both are open source and have huge followings for any problems/help and by the looks of this thread, it's a mixed bag.

 

But as peeps have said, it all depends on what you want from the site.

+1 for Joomla. The first thing I started was a blog. WordPless turned to be wonderful and when I needed a non-blog site I tried to use the CMS I'm familiar with. Frankly speaking it made me crazy. It seemed impossible to create simple category-based goods gallery and to make it look dignified. The problem was solved with Joomla. Now good working blog extensions are also available. So, it replaced WordPress for me.
