CESIL Posted July 6, 2011 Posted July 6, 2011 (edited) Well after posting a couple of side splittingly funny (just my opinion of course) jokes on a thread started by someone else I finally got my first negative rep! ...but to balance it out I also got 4 positive reps for the same joke(s), so overall a success! I am interested though in what subjects people on here feel are beyond a joke...I am personally of the opinion that all subjects can be laughed at if only to maintain some sort of perspective and sanity in this crazy, unfair and fecked up world in which we live/survive. Obviously it does depend a lot on the time/place that the humour is used...you don't generally turn up at a funeral and expect to get too many laughs, although I did get a laugh during my speech at my younger brother's funeral (that was a case of knowing your audience). Having friends of various nationalities and races, I understand that a racist joke told in such a way that it shows the ignorance of a racist can be funny. On the other hand a racist joke aimed at degrading a particular race is not funny.

If all jokes everywhere were completely sanitised to be made as inoffensive as possible, you'd have no jokes left*. If you don't enjoy it, just click away. Negative rep should really be used for personal attacks on people, genuinely offensive statements, obvious shilling for a company (although such users are normally banned pretty sharpish anyway). *possible exception: what's grey and can't swim? ... A filing cabinet. This may be offensive to filing cabinet enthusiasts and/or non-swimmers though, so YMMV. 3
MK-2 Posted July 6, 2011 Posted July 6, 2011 what is beyond a joke in general or on here? As I feel in general most things are fair game, but on here some jokes should be left outside. Even though the jokes about the paedophiles or rapists may be side splittingly funny, I just don't feel that an educational forum (even in a jokes section) is the right place for them.

If you refuse to accept a word as offensive, then you won't be offended by it and idiots will stop using it to try to insult you. I think any subject is fair game for a joke so long as that is all it is.

laserblazer Posted July 6, 2011 Posted July 6, 2011 I suppose in a strictly PC world, Irish/blonde jokes would be taboo but then they wouldn't be funny. I love Ireland and the Irish and I've loved a blonde or two as well. I would hate to offend them, or anyone else for that matter.

Over the years, humour has become more and more homogenised. So much so that someone like Frankie Boyle is castigated in the press for JOKES! It is the same in any walk of life....what's good for one person, will not be so good for another. However, these days you have to try to please EVERYONE, and as someone very famous once said.... (paraphrasing)"You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, but not all of the people all of the time" If you don't like a joke, why NEG REP? Just ignore it and move on..... Nothing to see here, move along please! 2

It's the same mentality as writing to Points of View about an "offensive" show. See Jerry Springer opera. Common sense would dictate that if you don't like something, don't do/watch/read it... but people like ruining other's entertainment.

Everyone has an OFF button on their telly. You ALL have the capacity to go to a different thread, so if you don't like a joke, and you see who posted it, you know that you probably won't like their jokes in future. Which of you would go and see the aforementioned Mr Boyle? I suspect it's only those that find him funny. Therefore, those who don't, stay away. That's how it works! It seems to have all the hall marks of a classic neg too. No reason, the post was fairly innocuous (was in Mattx's thread about driving while on the phone where I explained what a friend does so not even something I do or something I promote!!) and attempt at dialogue in the thread!!! I feel all warm and fuzzy now

I have only complained once, about that program Bonekickers, or something similar. It was so appallingly bad, I really did object to money being spent on it. I felt the cast and producers should have been paying us to allow them to make it.

If the BBC catered to lowest common denominator you'd have endless repeats of Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps, which genuinely would be offensive.

The evening went very well until the third of fourth act. This guy asked me what my job was [intending to make a joke out of my reply as part of his act] Perhaps he was expecting a reply like Fireman, Policeman, Postman or whatever. When I replied with "Network Manager" he seemed stumped. After a short delay [which seemed like an eternity to me] he said "Go f*ck yourself!" which broke the tension and got a good laugh from the whole audience.
