Yes I know that "we used the default voicemail pin to listen to messages" is not such a sensationalist headline.

I suppose as been said on one hand people can't get too bothered about celebrities having their phoned hacked. But people can sympathizer with parents of Milly Dowler who were not famous by choice but by need..

I wish they used the term Phreaking, That's what i always knew telecoms hacking as and its such a cool word.

 

It wouldn't instill the panic and fear as much, since "hacking" is the new flavor of the month in the news.

Yeah, but it's still 'accessing a system you're not entitled to' (I forget the actual terminology) which is the name of the charge.

 

Unfortunately the average Joe wouldn't understand the difference - so hacking it is.

A combination of social engineering (eg ringing up for a PIN reset impersonating the account holder) and logging in with default passwords, which isn't really hacking, cracking or phreaking.

Note for The Guardian: That person actually has genuine Integrity[tm] same as other folk I'm content to associate with - the only thing I've ever heard about their job is that they'd had a busy week attempting to correct some erroneous claims in [my words:] a very silly story that went national during an apparently very slow news week.

Both the select committees today were extremely boring and repetitive. I never imagined their were so many different questions which have the same answer from anyone you care to ask. Sorry folks but Douglas Adams clearly got it wrong, forget all about "42" it turns out that it's: "At that time I wasn't aware of...".

 

Did Tom Watson, almost the only person asking any decent questions today, leave the even more torturous Rebekah session in frustration? Could have sworn I heard a "..waste of time.." and abracadabra, he wasn't there.
