I have a feeling there was a thread on this previously but can't find it by searching but what's the best value and secure way to log into a system legitimately remotely nowadays please? I work part time in my school but often get calls asking me to pop in to sort issues out which I could most times do remotely if I had access.

The first option I would suggest would be to contact any LEA support you might have (i.e. network provision and broadband filtering etc) to see what they recommend you use.

I know that Lancashire are very specific about what they allow to come through as internal traffic to get on to the system and have a way of doing things, otherwise it just won't work.

If the system you're remoting to has an available open port on a (preferably fixed) IP address and a machine that you can install an SSH server on, then RDP (Windows Remote Desktop) over a port-forwaded SSH connection is free and simple enough to set up.

Ask the county for VPN access. Most have a couple of accounts for each school as part of the Broadband provision.
