happymeal Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 Afternoon all! I thought I'd ask the nice kind people here (Yeah, I'm after something...) where they stand on VLC and schools. I've got a ticket logged with me where a teacher would like VLC deploying to a set of PC's to play DVD's. The PC's already have PowerDVD, and I'm tempted to knock this on the head before it becomes a case of "I want this because I like it" and just stick to one piece of software - however, I'm curious where people stand on having VLC within schools. I've personally no problem with using the software at home (Free and easy!), but I've heard snippets about legal issues about using VLC and DVD decoders (Can't remember what exactly, and I can't find anything about it) and just wondered what the implications would be if I did decide to roll this out in the future in a school enviroment?
localzuk Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 We use VLC here. It uses libdvdcss, which has never been questioned in terms of legality.
Earthling Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 I use VLC here for everything, it's the only player I've found that works straight after install without loading any additional codec packs etc. And my experience with PowerDVD, ThisDVDplayer, ThatDVDPLayer, NeroDVD, UncleTomCobleyAndAllDVDWizard, Windows Misery Player and so on has not been good. 1

glennda Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 I use it - i've removed shortcuts to media player and just give them VLC as it works whereas Media Player doesn't tend to!

penfold Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 I've also use it for those users who have trouble playing some videos. I tend not to put it as the default unless they ask as anything that doesn't look like microsoft tend to confuse people

People normally use Windows Media player and have the option if they want. This does mean that VLC won't get any file type assocations or appear in the "open with" area but it works more or less. 1
ZeroHour Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 Regarding mpeg licenses, if your running windows 7 microsoft has already bought the mpeg license for you which is why windows 7 plays dvd's back without software. XP though you strictly dont have an mpeg license although its not really checked up on, the good news is though if you have purchased dvd software for playback that will include the license for the devices mpeg use. NOTE: this is what I have interpreted not necessarily fact. At my old school we let staff run vlc from a network unc as it made updating simpler and dealt with the problem of codecs well. 1

This is how I use it on in school machines, but I install it direct onto staff laptops.

Tip for you, you can use GPP to associate apps via GP even ones on a unc that is if you ever had too. 1

DrCheese Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 and with the latest version, they *finally* got rid of that sodding "Preparing font cache" BS that occurred when used on a fresh profile. That drove me crazy especially as it never did it on versions pre 1.1 (last year)
TechMonkey Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 Have it as standard here. Have a few odd smatterings of PowerDVD out but just about everything is set to VLC. We have just about knocked it into staff that if something isn't working open with VLC.

VLC does sometimes pause for a couple of seconds before it starts to play a DVD - your users just need to be patient and not start hammering random buttons.
