64 bit Machines but 32 bit servers?? Printer driver problems

Hi,

I'm new to this whole ICT TEchnician thing managed to land myself a techy job after being made redundant so ive inherited somebody elses network.

 

Ive recently purchased 32 new HP machines for my school with windows 7 64bit. The server runs CON2prnt script to add printers and and network drives. All our servers are 32 bit. The printers are installed on server 2003.

 

The problem ive come across is that the new machines will not add the printers automatically like the old ones running xp.

 

Should I install 64 bit drivers locally onto these machines? Printers are mainly HP

If you navigate to Printers and Faxes, (on the server) right click in an empty space and select 'Server Properties'. Click the 'Driver' tab and you can install drivers for 32/64Bit systems. Windows will then automatically install the right driver.

 

I'm not a massive fan of Con2prnt scripts. I much prefer deploying printers with Group Policy. It's easier and keeps scripts a lot more simple.

You should be able to browse to the server from one of the 64 bit machines, open the "printers" share, right click anywhere and click "server properties", go to drivers and add the 64 bit drivers there.

We had some trouble doing this until we got exactly the same version drivers then it worked at treat.
