Dom_ Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 Yeah I knew it had been renewed already - great news :-P! I also bought the first book on Saturday, only read the first couple of pages so far though as not had much time! Walking dead was awesome I agree - is it back in November?

I do enjoy it and have red most of the graphic novels and hope that they stick to it a little bit more then the first trail season, but either way Zombies + Survivors + guns = good times no matter what!

Fatmas Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 Ok, here we go: Boardwalk Empire - Fairly slow at times but well worth watching. Breaking Bad - Amazing show, 3 seasons so far, watch them all. The Wire - Obvious choice. Generation Kill - Kind of modern day Band of Brothers from the creators of The Wire. More realistic and very interesting. Walking Dead - Already mentioned. Brilliant. Some excellent US comedy shows if you can stick with them: 30 Rock - Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin, some amazing guest stars too. Community - Stick it out, amazing. There is some great UK tv but at the moment, there is also some amazing US Drama/comedy.

I read the books as they were published (was in the book trade at the time, so had advance copies) and I'm quite lucky(?) in that I can normally remember if I liked a book and major plot points, but not detail - so when I watch an adaptation bits still surprise me. That bit I definitely knew was coming, but it was still a shock. I remember rushing through the first few chapters of the second book expecting it all to have been a cunning sleight of hand! Apparently people are claiming that they've cancelled their HBO sub after the events of the episode. They ain't seen nothing yet...

Seconded, avoid all media sources if you want to get the best out of the ep. I want to know will happen with Drogo - everyone seems to have ignored his part in the episode! I assumed he would have survived and had a chance to restore his honor by killing all those poxy Lannisters! (Except the imp who is one of the best characters in the show!)

I did not realise it was that sword. Likewise, I was hoping for some kind of epic rescue attempt! Rarely a show "really" stirs my emotions, but when that happened, I was so angry! As the sword came down and went "chop", I grabbed my head in utter shock!
sonofsanta Posted July 20, 2011 Posted July 20, 2011 (edited) Sorry for the necro, but just finished watching through GoT at the weekend, and I still can't stop thinking about it (watched the last three episodes back to back). This may be a bit spoilery, though I'll try not to speak in specifics. An absolutely stellar, unbeatable, impeccable series. Just incredible. Acting all round was superb, and learning the characters was a bit of a challenge early on (so many to introduce!) but by god, each and every one of them was brilliant. The first time Jaime Lannister walked on screen my wife and I went "Prince Charming, then" but he turned out to be so much more - a man haunted by past deeds, tarred by them even, with the expectations of a father on his head, an inappropriate relationship with close family members, a masochistic love of pain... and he's far from the best character in it (which is, of course, Tyrion Lannister, wandering around with Jerome Flynn's knight, who is also surprisingly marvellous). The best part of the show was the interaction between Mark Addy and Sean Bean, who've known each other for years anyway, and it showed. Such a brilliant portrayal of two men who've changed the world but just want to be left alone now. One of my favourite parts was King Robert's conversation about the first time he killed a man - so wonderfully understated by all characters, and genuinely revealing. Even the Khal Drogo storyline over the sea picked up and won me over, and Danaerys' character arc was impeccably acted. Her brother's crowning did make me feel a bit squeamish, though he absolutely had it coming. The pivotal moment, though, from the end of episode 9, still has me in shock. So undeserved, and unfair, and cowardly. The contrast to episode one - "the man who passes the sentence should swing the sword" - is little consolation, I fear. The man deserved so much better, and I'm almost mourning for him. My biggest problem now is that I'm torn between devouring the books and waiting for the adaptations - the TV show has been so superb I almost don't want to ruin all the twists, but I don't know how I'll wait...!
