Peugeot 107 Clutch needs replacing - 2009 and 19k miles.

Hello,

 

I am having clutch problems with my car, and believe I need a replacement clutch. Should this be necessary at 19k miles on a 2009 car? It's a Peugeot 107.

 

I know this is an IT forum but you IT people out there seem to give me more detailed info than them on motoring forums.

It shouldn't, but then it's French, so all bets are off !

No clutch should be fine at that age and mileage, i would check with peugot it may be covered under the warranty period. I cant see how the clutch could be broken at that many miles unless you never use the handbrake or are seriously riding that thing.

If you haven't had it from new then you won't know the abuse it may have had in the past.

 

Seems early but if it needs doing unfortunately it will have to be done.

I always use handbrake, the mechanics of the car are actually japanease because they use the same engines in toyota aygo and citroen c1; but I believe the parts are japanease (my engine actually has Toyota stamped on it).

It may have one of these fancy duel mass flywheels which eat clutches for breakfast

I am not even sure it is the clutch itself yet. When the car is stationary like at some traffic lights, there is a rattling sound which sounds like the exhaust pipe but it's not - and my gears have become all of a sudden dead hard to get in.

Have you been using it?? Daft question but people skip gears without using the clutch...which breaks the thing...

Do you mean take it out of gear without using clutch? Does it sound like a broken gearbox mount?

Has a women drove it? If yes then 19k miles sounds about right. As said, it is French.

If it's 2009 you should still have a years warranty on it. It's worth checking.

Clutches are usually excluded from warranties, unless you can show that it's a defect rather than wear'n'tear. My old Saxo clutch went, a spring broke, jamming the whole mechanism. The clutch linings were fine, though.

 

Driven sympathetically, a clutch can last ages (my French Renault van has 148,000 miles on the original clutch). It's not the mileage that wears the clutch out, it's the nature of the journeys.

 

Low mileages aren't necessarily an advantage. Stop/start city driving means lots of wear on the clutch and many other parts. It's impossible to tell how any previous owner has driven it. I cringe when I hear a 'clucth burner' drive past... poor car!

Nice, but french build quality. Autobox (e-CVT with semi-auto mode) has thrown a rod now 3 times in 2 months, dealership sit round with their thumbs up their bottoms, saying "ummerr..." and being generally unhelpful.

 

Contrast that to all my autos - UK made, not one under 11 years old, daily short trips, not treated with kid gloves...utterly reliable.

 

Missus now understands why I say "French car? Rather push the Astra, dearest..".

When stationary does the rattling sound go away when you press the clutch and then come back when you release the clutch? if so it may be the clutch release bearing. If it rattles all the time when stationary with the clutch in and out it would not be the clutch its the gearbox, have you checked for a gearbox oil leak and made sure their is enough oil in the gearbox?

 

had a friend with a new suzuki switft clutch went and the dealer wouldnt touch it under warranty 6 months old said it must be the way he drives, after an argument the dealer took the box off and the clutch had gearbox oil on it from a leaking seal, so make sure you dont get fobbed off by them!

It seems common on the 107/C1/Aygo for the clutch to go around every 30k

As others have said, it seems that a lot of people are having defective clutches around the 20K mark. The Toyota variant (Aygo) has had the problem mostly resolved by putting in a modified clutch, and replacing faulty ones with Yaris parts.

 

I can see them trying to fob you off, so it may be a case of CAB/Trading standards. If that doesn't get you anywhere, a trusted local garage with the part swapped out with a Yaris clutch may be your best bet.

I agree with this. I have a Pug 307 and just replaced my clutch and it also had this noise, along with a "clunking" and bit of resistance when you put down the clutch pedal.

 

Luckily mine was the 90bhp model so do dual mass flywheel. (No DPF either, so another bonus!)
