If you were a cyclist and regularly heard 'I pay road tax, you don't' as an argument against you then you would care. But then, potholes are even more dangerous for cyclists. Hitting one on a bike can cause a serious accident, rather than just scuffing paintwork or damaging the car.

why does this have to turn into a cars vs bikes thing again? you've just admitted that potholes are dangerous, and even though you might think it only scuffs or damages the car (it can have just as serious consequences in a car) it affects both cars and bikes, so why suddenly turn this into another cars vs bikes argument?

It is an issue of symantics. People should stop calling vehicle excise duty 'road tax' as it isn't a road tax. That name on its own leads to the arguments. As I said, it is more often than not the cyclists amongst us that are on the receiving end of that abuse, rather than being the ones who start the arguments.

 

Not trying to have an argument here, more trying to point out that people shouldn't use 'road tax' as a term.

Well I understand and agree with your post localzuk although it’s not just cyclists that get that problem. Being a horse rider I have had car drivers (motorbikes) stop and use the road tax excuse as a reason that they “own” the road and saying I shouldn’t be on it

Doesn't do my cars tracking, suspension , tyres or anything else much good when I end up going into and or over a pothole(s) , I can see the £££££ symbols going out the window when it happens ( which isn't very often ) but it still does damage to my property that I have to fork the money out for to fix

As a pedestrian on a lane with no pavement / verge / walkway I have had the same. The road tax thing annoys me too. It is either ignorance from people who can't be bothered to read their paperwork, let alone the highway code when it gets revised (broad generalisation ... and a little trolling) or it is intentional use to hark back to the 'glory days' ... and is done by the same people who insist on converting to old money, never use a metric measurement, complain about the length of skirts (being too short that is ...) or question why anyone would want to use that modern, new-fangled eletrickery!

 

At least those riding broomsticks can keep out of this ... and the less said about those cape-wearing, lycra-clad, muscle-bound super heros flying around everywhere the better!

It is your income tax and council tax. The funds for highway repairs come from central government funds, some goes direct to central departments to repair motorways etc... and some is given as grants to local authorities to do their local networks, which is added to by council tax.

 

So, VED may end up being used, but only because it comes from a central pot.

While they may be able to avoid 'Road Tax' issues (what about walking across the road?) do they pay aviation charges or are we going to hear about airline pilots winding down the window to yell at said superheroes/broomstick users or trying to catch them in the blades of their aircraft (Remember kids capes are dangerous)

They take off and land where ever they want, they don't chug down aviation fuel and they certainly don't pay import duties when they fly back from abroad with their latest goodies ... I don't care if they have saved Australia from falling into a crack in the earth, they should pay tax on all that wine they are given as a thank you!

 

Tax the bristles, tax the capes, tax the sequins, tax the pointy hats ... obviously we should not tax the facepaint as there are some legitimate uses of that ... and I hope my proposal for Smugness Tax is accepted. That'll sort them out!
