Gatt Posted January 9, 2013 Posted January 9, 2013 Isn't this the same figure fiddling that they did with Vista (Activated OEM licences for Vista, but sold with Windows XP Downgrade installed)?
zag Posted January 9, 2013 Posted January 9, 2013 Isn't this the same figure fiddling that they did with Vista (Activated OEM licences for Vista, but sold with Windows XP Downgrade installed)? Yep we never installed 1 vista machine at work but "bought" 500 licenses though volume licensing.
Quackers Posted January 9, 2013 Posted January 9, 2013 Using somthing like Operating system market share is better than counting how many copies have been sold. We have a few devices with Windows 8 OEM stickers on the bottom but they are not running it.
SPM Posted January 12, 2013 Posted January 12, 2013 Look at the reviews mate, they are very nearly universally positive, not to mention the fact that carriers publically admitted that out of all the phones they sell, the Windows Phone's have the lowest return rate. Marketing is killing the phone nothing else, I've yet to meet anyone who has said "I don't like it". It's usually "I'd get it if it had this app" and with Nokia around the corner it's on it's way up. Holds the record for the fastest 0-10,000 apps. Also, it isn't Windows Phone interface, it's the Metro UI interface that Microsoft have been designing for a while now. Beware of reviews - a lot of reviewers are paid for their reviews by the company that is making the product. Microsoft uses these "independent paid consultants" quite extensively to promote their products. The Metro is a Windows Phone UI with added features. One thing that is certain is that users and customers don't like the Windows Phone 7/Metro interface - they have voted with their feet on this, despite massive and expensive marketing campaigns. I think the problem with the Metro interface is that Microsoft was making no traction with the Metro interface on the Windows Phone 7/8, but they have a desktop PC monopoly. So they asked - how do we leverage our desktop PC monopoly to force users into the mobile phone and tablet market on our products? The came up with the idea of forcing Windows PC users to use the Metro interface so they become familiar with it, and would then want to buy mobile phones and tablets with the UI on it. Metro is a Frankenstein interface which doesn't work well on a tablet or a laptop or PC.
SYNACK Posted January 12, 2013 Posted January 12, 2013 @SPM - you don't like it , there are plenty of us who do on a phone, I'd take it over android or iOS any day.
sparkeh Posted January 12, 2013 Posted January 12, 2013 @SPM - you don't like it , there are plenty of us who do on a phone Mmm all 2-3% of you all
SYNACK Posted January 12, 2013 Posted January 12, 2013 Mmm all 2-3% of you all Meh, another jack ass review that only takes into account a few markets, you'd think there were only four countries on the entire planet from most of them. The reviews are also polarised, either they are good and so blamed on being paid for or completely negative showing a clear bias in the other direction. The reviews/media can't really be trusted for anything any more as their sole purpose is now serving their own agenda. Call me cynical but its hard to argue that this is not the case. Even with stuff you can measure reviewers can editorialise about the fashion or subjective usability. Still, I'm no stranger to being different.
sparkeh Posted January 12, 2013 Posted January 12, 2013 Unfortunately, and I think this is one thing that can be legitimately laid at the door of Apple, this kind of consumer tech is nothing short of a fashion parade these days. Pick your brand and defend it/attack others as necessary.
SYNACK Posted January 12, 2013 Posted January 12, 2013 Indeed, it has been diluted to which goes best with which handbag levels of assessment now.

sparkeh Posted January 12, 2013 Posted January 12, 2013 Thats hardly new i can remember st vs amiga speccy vs c64 vs acorn arguments long ago Sure, I partook in those myself, difference is the arguments were over spec/performance etc. Today its over which lifestyle dream you prefer to be sold.
SPM Posted January 13, 2013 Posted January 13, 2013 @SPM - you don't like it , there are plenty of us who do on a phone, I'd take it over android or iOS any day. Most Windows users seem to hate it though.
Arthur Posted January 13, 2013 Posted January 13, 2013 Most Windows users seem to hate it though. You're going to need proof to back that statement up. 1
Gatt Posted January 14, 2013 Posted January 14, 2013 I don't hate the iOS or the iPhone / iPAD What I hate is the way Apple choose to market it at such over inflated prices and how people with an iPhone/iPad feel the need to inform every other person about how they own one and have the attitude that all over devices are inferior and everyone else should have one (Hmm putting it like that kinda makes Apple sound like the Borg - Scary!) BTW, not all Apple users are like this, and Blackberry users are on a par with the above statement!
Sheridan Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 Well I've spent around a week with Windows 8 and I'm pretty much ready to give up on it. Fair enough if MS had taken a bold step and created a new OS, but this is a patched/botched up copy of Windows 7 with a clumsy interface stuck on top. Everything runs in Windows 7 but you're forced to pretend its new by fighting around the metro interface. From an admins point of view its awful - I've yet to see any useful addition unless you're on a tablet. Plus it seems to just have fundamental flaws. Like it won't install RSAT for Windows 8 (on mine anyway - its been sat 'preparing the installtion' for 30 minutes and thats the 5th attempt!) and ignores a lot of group policy settings. Windows 7 had plenty of issues but I could see the point of the changes from XP. This is just change for changes sake - and obviously a conscious descision from MS to take an even bigger step away from corporate and education users - can you honestly imagine businesses using Win8?
themightymrp Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 You're going to need proof to back that statement up. You're up to page 37 of a thread full of people saying they hate it....
Gatt Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 You're up to page 37 of a thread full of people saying they hate it.... Erm, no - Page 22 - unless this post ends up on P23 now!
themightymrp Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 Odd, mine says page 37 of 37?? Unless theres an option as to how much is displayed on a page. Still, 22 pages is a lot
sonofsanta Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 Odd, mine says page 37 of 37?? Unless theres an option as to how much is displayed on a page. Still, 22 pages is a lot 37 of 37 here as well. Personally I dislike all this Metro stuff just because it is still botched and half-@rsed. I love how Windows Phone works (my wife has the Lumia 800), but on my daughter's Surface, WinRT is a pain. Maybe my view is distorted because if I'm using it, it's because it's broken, but using (effectively) the Win7 desktop on a 10.6" screen with your finger is. Not. Fun. Server 2012 is also horrible. Even in desktop mode, sometimes you will select one window and it will arbitrarily hide all others. In Windows. WTH.
themightymrp Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 In the general settings you can adjust how many posts are displayed per page, mine is set to 'forum default'
gshaw Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 It's the inconsistency that's really killing the product - with 8 you often have that feeling of "what interface am I going to get now?" Ironically despite rushing Win8 to market to compete with the iPad the hardware available isn't up to scratch for the OS (imo) so in 20:20 hindsight MS really could've waited another couple of months and had some decent tablets (including Surface Pro) sorted as well as a while longer to sort out the UI issues. Whether they'll get a 2nd chance with an SP1 re-release with more suitable hardware is debatable, the market may have given up and moved on by then which could really spell trouble for Microsoft.
Sheridan Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 Has anyon actually got the RSAT tools to work in 8? I downloaded the package and installed it with no errors, but nothing appears anywhere on the system, and cannot be found in the Windows features list. Not a good start.

Not a good start. you have to install the en-us language pack (or whatever its called) i believe as it dosent recognise en-gb as a language
