Pre Configured Joomla Install for Edugeek Members?

Just a tip to help debug installations it's worth checking your php.ini and turning on error reporting as it tends to be turned off on win installs.

Tried running it in my VMWare W2k3 server - exactly the same error msg.

Well have had alot of interest but not much feedback as yet. So to make things easier for people to take alook I have managed to setup a live demo site.

I'll sum up a few things that I have found or think might be good to expand on.

 

The introduction of JEvents (a calendar extension) might be a good idea. This can go in place of the 'term dates' section.

 

There are some standard graphics that a school is likely to want to change, eg the logo and some of the buttons, and if these could be placed in a single folder with suitable instructions in a readme file (name, role, maximum file dimension, suggested file size, etc) it would help getting pages up quickly.

 

RSS feeds for the news section ... always a good one to have, and if you can have different feeds for different catagories it might help (school news, department news, student voice) ... hitting a couple of different target audiences really.

 

Personal preference for me but I would prefer Documents to have a menu too, similar to Parent Information / Curriculum Information ... we have so many documents that we really do need to seperate them out into the relevant areas. It just makes it so much easier for the admin staff to manage.

 

I do think having *one* news item underneath the welcome message would be nice. It makes it more dynamic otherwise the only thing that changes on the front page is a few graphics and the *urgent* message.

 

A very nice job that you have done there ... I can't wait to get it onto a proper box and kill it by putting different components/modules/mambots in.

What do I need to do to get it up and running on Lancs servers?

 

Will I have to request sql/php facilities or is that enabled as standard?

PHP works as standard on the lancsngfl webspace. You must request a MySQL database to be setup for your site though.

Any old LAMP installation will work. You need the actual php files (usually hiding in the web server document root) and an export of the database (either produced from mysqldump or phpmyadmin).

I realise that but I always like advice from someone who has used one last week and is a normal person and not a LAMP/WAMP/MAMP/LUMP etc expert

@SimpleSi: A lot of people use Ubuntu Server for easily setting up a LAMP server... I have never installed a LAMP server this way so I'm not sure exactly what packages are installed. You will probably need to install phpmyadmin with a quick 'apt-get install' but then you will have a pretty intuitive interface for managing your database.

Well, I've downloaded and installed Grandma'a LAMP VM appliance and that seems to be up and running but I think I'll need sysman_mk's help to tell me what to transfer across now!

Well. I've played a bit now with things.

 

I've manged to do a standard Joomla install on my LAMP VM - worked fine.

 

I've installed sysman_mk's local ravenswood setup and that works fine.

 

I've installed a standard Ravenswood setup and that works fine.

 

I've transferred sysman_mk's site from his setup into a standard setup by successfully exporting and importing his SQL database.

 

But I can't copy his setup to my LAMP VM - it gives me the lovely Joomla page saying can't connect to database server.

 

Now my LAMP is running MySQL 5.0.22 and the Ravenswood one is 4.0.20a. Does anyone know of any issues in transferring from one to another?

Its always the simple stuff that gets you

 

In the Ravenswood setup MySQL user=root has a password of root.

 

In my VM LAMP MySQL user root has no password - changed this in configuration.php and it works.

Just need to work out how to use it now

I have now finally got this to work ok and its looks great. I can't wait to get it going for my infant school so i can update their site. Any ideas when the completed template will be ready???
