Using iPad in school with proxy server!

Hi Guys

 

One of the schools I support has got some iPads in school now. The school uses a Sophos Web Appliance for its internet filtering.

 

The iPads are setup to go through the proxy server and they work for web browsing just fine. However, for some reason when you try and use the native mail app, it doesn't seem to get through to the internet. We have tried for a while now to figure this one out and even had Sophos on the case but can't seem to get it working.

 

Any suggestions?

settings -> wi-fi -> select wireless network which authenticates and connects ( gets valid ip / network info ) --> press the arrow pointing to the right --> scroll to the bottom and you can enable proxy setting either manual where you can specify port, server and authentication on or off or you can do it automagically using a pac file

 

I presume you have tried both ways and both do not work ?

 

If they require authentication is there no way you can create a standard ad account which has the correct proxy security group or whatever and then use this account as the authentication details on the ipads ?

 

Otherwise users will have to put there AD Details in if it requires authentication but then not sure if doing the above will help unless the teachers are aware of the above default ad account logon details ?

 

Also does the mail app require internet access ie is the mail server on your domain ( LAN ) or is it as you stated external ie LEA Mail server ?

 

If external then I presume its exchange and if exchange which version ie 2003, 2007 ?

 

Only other thing I can think of is on your proxy server are there any logs to show date / time when you tried to access mail and it got denied on your proxy server or what port is the ipad trying to use to access mail ( again hoping it shows this on your proxy server ) to see if its the same port as what a normal pc would use

Check DNS servers that are setup on the iPads... find a ping app to install, whack it on, and try to contact the mailservers with that...

use a .pac file and specify a bypass on the email servers IP address

You have to set up firewall rules for the mail app to work. We had to set up an SMTP rule and add all of the ports for all of the different mail providers. Some other apps don't support proxies that require authentication regardless of what you set up in the proxy settings on the device.

I've had issues with the Proxy on iPads, wouldn't work just entering "proxy" as normal, but did work when entering the IP address of the proxy server...

We just enter the DNS name of our proxy server in any iOS devices - Windows PCs do WPAD perfectly fine but never seems to work just right with iOS (for us at least!).
