The installation of SP2 may potentially regress hotfixes that have been deployed previously; Microsoft has released a script to scan for hotfixes that may potentially regress.

Although you should be aware that this line:

Download the compressed file and double-click to activate it. It will then extract files to a directory you choose.

.. is b*llox as it just goes ahead and installs itself where it wants..

Not sure what it has or hasn't done but I'll be damned if I can find what's happened to it.

Hmm I'll leave this till Easter I think :)

You can't, you can't install any other security patches until the machine has been patched with SP2.

From April onwards perhaps but for patches already released they won't have SP2 as a prereq

No but if you install SP2 later (and you'll have to anyway) the patches get regressed and you'll have to run the vbs checker script reapply them manually as I mentioned before.

The vbs checker script is extracted to c:\windows\system32 by default, in case anybody is having trouble locating it.

WSUS has picked up the service pack, but I haven't tried approving it yet.

I don't think there are any extra 'features' in W2K3 SP2 (Unlike XP SP2). It's merely a rollup of existing hotfixes and patches. The only confusion seems to be that some newer updates don't seem to be included (thus you have to reapply them).

Ughh..either I'm reading this the wrong way or that's a bit of a step change. Where's the MS statement on SP2 being a prerequisite for future sec-fixes?

Or are you just saying the longer you leave off applying SP2 the more it is likely to regress later?

Yes it did come with WSUS.

We had an issue where after the SP2 install we could not use RIS, we found out that we had to run the WDS mmc for the first time to configure it (easy wizard) then RIS worked fine.

We only found out by chance after trying to manually start the binlsvc.
