Server monitoring...

In the summer we will be replacing all of our servers for new shiny ones. As part of the quotation that I have had is the servicing quote, now in part of the quotation is monitoring software and well it's £7000

 

I thought this was very steap and to be frank I am not happy about spending that sort of money on something which is essentially just going to fire out an email to someone who will just go through the correct proceedures.

 

is there any software where I can pretty much do this myself? I have been looking at Nagios and I think it looks pretty sweet. I am unsure how it will work though. I want something where it will tell me predictive failures that will arrise, monitor the network and and all the fancy bits.

 

Essential peice I need though is predictive failures, it must tell me if a hard drive is going to fail either by email or text not to fussed about which way though. Does Nagios do this?

 

How do you guys do it in your work place, do you monitor this yourself or do you have a 3rd party managing it all for you?

Have you look at SCOM yet?

Its MS so its cheap for schools and it can monitor hardware drivers and report problems with them to you. Dell for example have SCOM packs for monitoring power usage as well with there newer kit.

Worth a gander at least.

we use server assist, not free but very nice and UK based support and development. have found issues with it, and ended up with fixed builds by the next day before. Server Monitoring and Network Monitoring for Windows, Linux, applications and SNMP

It monitors servers and other network devices. It has a lot of checks that allow to response on particular events...

If you are looking at Avocent LanDesk, I would step very very carefully. We have it and keep finding issues and find that it cannot do things without extra licenses.

OpsView is basically Nagios plus other bits, with a web frontend. Of course they'll spam you to death to upgrade, and the VMWare appliance needs the vmdk converting to a flat version before ESXi will load it, and the documentation sucks, but apart from that, I like it so far

I use PRTG at home and we also use it at work, very easy to setup, pretty cool monitoring software.
