skunk Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 Hi All Just had the bill from our RBC for this year and it has gone up three fold on last year and 4.5x from the year before. I understand the reasons for this, govt cuts, but it may just be time to look elsewhere. Anyone using/looking at non RBC internet providers? We currently get 100Mbs (60 in reality) syncronous/uncontended connection, not sure we need this as we rarely see use anywhere near this level. The bundled services we get are not a deciding factor.

Basically you can get a 100mbit fiber line for around 14-16k a year from companies like Virgin, Easynet, Globalaxs ect. Virgin even do a 1gbit line for 20k which I was very tempted with I'm currently testing a BT business VDSL line which is 1k a year and seems good so far. I blogged about it here. 1
skunk Posted May 9, 2011 Author Posted May 9, 2011 We run our own filter already, are already talking about alternatives to the RBC VLE and email as they are causing us problems. Only remote access and parental portal (when it gets delivered) are a cause for a headache if we move.

I simply replaced the box with a smoothwall or Sophos box and it worked perfectly.
RTFM Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 It's amazing how its cheaper to get your own filter, firewall and broadband provision in than rely on the LA. I'd rather run things yourself and know your in control of it than rely on someone else anyway.
john Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 Have a talk to LUNS, they have just provided me with a very good quote for 100Mb service here in Rural Yorkshire, and we have our own Smoothwall Filtering and in-house Exchange server and will start to use Smoothwalls email filtering product shortly so they are well worth talking to. If you drop an email to LUNS its probably a good starting place - LUNS – Lancaster University Network Services and see what they can do for you, they may still have kit dotted around Cumbria that they can access 1
