DVD Duplicator

We're looking for a DVD Duplicator.

 

We duplicate about 30 DVDs 2 or three times a year and about 200-240 DVDs once or twice a year.

 

Should w buy a DVD duplicator or use a company instead?

In my previous job, we had a CD Duplicator and then later on a DVD Duplicator. Both used the Acard controller which you can use to build yourself a decent box. Not too expensive, it's only when you go for the fully automated units; robotic arms to change discs and feed into a printer is when you're talking lots of dough. But to be honest, if your doing just the odd run and with that many discs, outsource it. It is a very tedious job swapping discs.

If you look on Ebay theres a few pre built duplicators ... we bought one based on the Acard controller with 7 drives ... It cost less than buying the bits and building it ourselves !!!

I also have many DVDs to burn through the year.

 

Dont know if any good but instead of buying one of those. Heres what i do.

 

I make the DVD into an image (iso) then I use a two tiny programs called ISOBURN and EjectCD, both free. Using our IT Suite of 30 computers I use our suite control program (abTutor) to eject all the cd drives. Go round and manually put a blank in each machine (2 minutes) and then again using the suite control set ISOBurn to burn the dvds through a silent command switch. The ISO is hosted on a network share and although you would think this would take a long time it doesnt, it takes around 20 minutes to do 30 copies.

We have a Microboards GX-2 dvd duplicator here. It also has a printer built in so duplicates and then prints each disc in turn.

 

Only caveat with this is that you really have to use good quality discs, not cheap ones, as cheap ones seem to vary in thickness and some get stuck.

I've made one from an Acard controller a few years ago, sits on my desk at work and is great for copying CDs and DVDs, think at the time, including the Pioneer DVD-RW Drives which were the most reliable with the controller, it cost about £150 to make and has been great

That's a spot on idea! I tend to use ISO's too rather than straight copies as they can be reused when teachers lose the disc you gave them the day before.
