Frazer Posted October 11, 2005 Posted October 11, 2005 We currently have some software called Imperata by Divace Solutions that allows us to: View all pcs in a class as thumbnails simultaneously or as a screen scanner (10secs per screen) cycling through all pcs Remotely view one pc at a time with the option of taking control or colaberating with the student Share your own screen to all pcs in demo mode (from tutors machine) Share another students pc with everyone else in demo mode Shut down, log off, restart a selection of pcs simultaneously. Lock screens/keyboards/mice. Share/force open documents. All this can be done by selection of any number of pcs. Is there any free software that does some or all of this (im already aware of vnc variants)? What pay alternatives are there (not sure of the capabilities of netsupport)?
ninjabeaver Posted October 11, 2005 Posted October 11, 2005 I use this software. http://www.richmondsys.co.uk/richmondsystems/products/netop/remotecontrol/?wcw=google Hmm, cant get the URL thing to work properly. It keeps placing it at the top of the reply screen. I'm looking for free versions as well if anyone has any.
russdev Posted October 11, 2005 Posted October 11, 2005 Lanview 3 from mst-software http://www.mst-software.co.uk uses vnc as main viewer but then has its own client to do various things remotley form central workstation Russ
Dos_Box Posted October 11, 2005 Posted October 11, 2005 NetSupport Manager and NetSupport School. Absoloutley and positively the best, and no stupid licensing restrictions for management consoles like others which are mentioned. Also if you buy NetSupport Manager you get NetSupport School free as part of the licencing. http://www.netsupport-inc.com/ Regardless of what other people have ended up with this IS the best one.
ConTheITGuy Posted October 11, 2005 Posted October 11, 2005 NetOP here - very flaky Does a lot of good stuff - when it does it. What kind of cost is involved in NSM Chris (or others )? Andy.
rokeby Posted October 11, 2005 Posted October 11, 2005 have used netop but now use Ranger remote control (netsupport) and have find it much better.
Dos_Box Posted October 11, 2005 Posted October 11, 2005 With NetOp you must license every 'command' installation. With NetSupport Manager you do not. Every classroom can have a 'command' pc for the teacher with no extra licencing costs. You also do not have to buy a license for every PC. If you have 400 computers within your school you can buy just 300 licenses because you proberbly won't connect to 400 pc's. NetSupport also has inventory functionality, scripting, and all of the other bells and whistles that the other should have but don't. Oh yeah, and you can have Mac and Linux clients too.
Frazer Posted October 11, 2005 Author Posted October 11, 2005 Im confused over the licencing for netsupport manager :/ Also cant find anywhere that suggests you get netsupport school free when you buy manager. What we have and need is: 215~ workstations total: 4x 30 ict suites, each with their own tutor machine (31) which will need to be able to manage each of their 30 student pcs 3x admin workstations (us!) that will need to remotely connect/manage all workstations Maybe need the client(?) on all staff laptops for us to help manage them also, so thats another 150~.
Dos_Box Posted October 11, 2005 Posted October 11, 2005 The licensing is simple. You pay one licence cost (per licence obviously) for NetSupport Manager. This covers you for all configurations, wether it be a client (pupils workstation), NetSupport School (a teachers PC to control the classroom) or NetSupport Manager (for you to control and administer the network). You can just buy NetSupport School should you wish, but it does not have all of the bells and whisles you need. Contact them through here. http://www.netsupportsoftware.co.uk/ And get hold of the demo. You'll love it.
Ric_ Posted October 11, 2005 Posted October 11, 2005 @Frazer: They don't advertise that you get the School component free but you do. Speak to them directly as you will get way better pricing - also the maintenance is worth taking out since they tend to have a couple of major releases each year!
Ric_ Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 Just come across http://italc.sourceforge.net/ which is free (although I can't get it working!)
MkII Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 AB Tutor Control is highly rated here too - pay per control PC = £150 for one or £100 each for 3 or more IIRC. We have 300 PCs - how much would NetSupport cost us anyone??
MkII Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 Just spoke to live support at NetSupport: [mark]: Hi - I want to know how much it would cost to install NetSupport School across our site of 300 PCs (approx) [Jason Thickpenny ]: Hi Mark - what company are you from? [mark]: in [mark]: Also - i'm told if we buy NetSupposrt Manager - NS School is free?? [Jason Thickpenny ]: That is correct- would you like a price on both? [mark]:yes lease [mark]: *p [Jason Thickpenny ]: The RRP price for NetSupport Manager for 300 users is 8,235 for the software (one of cost) and 1,647 for the on-going maintenance (renewable annually) [Jason Thickpenny ]: NetSupport School is 5,352 for the software (one off cost) and 1,070.40 for the maintenance. [Jason Thickpenny ]: We will put all this information in an offical quote to you. [mark]: thanks very much
MkII Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 So NSSchool is 10 times the cost of AB Tutor (presently) PLUS annual maintenance, and MSManager 15 times. No contest then...
localzuk Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 We were using Imperata but found it slow and annoying so have now purchased 5 licenses for AB Tutor control and find it great. There are a few glitches which I have been told about but haven't had time to look at yet but for £100 a license you can't complain.
Blind Posted March 21, 2007 Posted March 21, 2007 I've only been testing the demos, but Vison from GenevaLogic is almost as good as NetSupport, but much cheaper. In the US they offer a site license for schools under 1000 students for around $4,000.
Al_NetSupport Posted March 21, 2007 Posted March 21, 2007 I've only been testing the demos, but Vison from GenevaLogic is almost as good as NetSupport, but much cheaper. In the US they offer a site license for schools under 1000 students for around $4,000. Vision from GenevaLogic is a nice product ( formerly called Mastereye ), but just make sure you are comparing like with like. NetSupport School contains all features in the standard application, with Vision you pay an additional charge for Internet Control (Surf-Lock), an additional charge for Application control (App-Control) and even an extra charge for the on-screen annotation tools (Pointer). When you add on all the extras the price difference is not quite so significant. Just to clarify an earlier comment, a customer can purchase NetSupport School or if they also need to provide IT support as well as Classroom instruction and monitoring, they can purchase NetSupport Manager. NetSupport Manager offers all the tools a system administrator would need for managing computers across a LAN (or WAN) such as remote system inventories, low level management tools, connectivity via the internet as well as remote monitoring. NetSupport School is included in NetSupport Manager for free, as many schools are looking for both types of solutions, and can share their IT and ICT budgets to purchase NetSupport Manager and get the School software included. Finally, NetSupport School is not the cheapest classroom management solution, we know that, but equally it does offer the most features and is the most scaleable. I would always advocate you try a few solutions managing 25 or more computers rather than a 2 or 3, often products that look great at first glance, grind to halt when you have 30 systems to monitor or provide instruction to. There are a few really good products available and a lot of poor ones, it really depends on what features you need and of course, what your budget is. I work at NetSupport ( I'm sure you could guess), we always encourage feedback and are equally happy to contribute to these forums. Let me know if you have any other questions or need clarification on the above. Al.
merlin Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 Al is right on at least one point – it is good to try out classroom management software on your full lab. I think you’ll find that Vision is the easiest, most effective, and most robust solution for teaching with technology. Vision’s popularity in the UK is rising rapidly, and it is already the leading brand of classroom management software in the United States and much of Europe. Teachers like Vision because it is designed with their needs in mind, and offers innovative features like a floating toolbar, so that you can cleanly and easily share your computer screen with your students without the classroom management software interface getting in your way. And the Surf-Lock controls are really easy to use, but at the same time much more complete and robust than what you get from other companies. In the UK you can get the entire Vision family (Vision, Surf-Lock, App-Control and Pointer) in one package called the Vision School Kit. The Vision School Kit costs £1410.00 to equip 3 ICT Suites with no limits as to the number of PC's in each. Our distributor, Codework, can give you more pricing information or put you in touch with a reseller near you. Contact [email protected]. To download the software and try it out, go to http://www.genevalogic.co.uk There is also a great 4-minute video on the site that shows how Vision works in a real classroom. I’m the Product Marketing Manager for Vision at GenevaLogic, and I’d be happy to chat with any of you, or supply any other information you would like. Thanks for letting me post on your forum, Chris Streight
MkII Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 We're currently trying ABTutor across our whole site - we monitor all student PCs at once from out office, and it's working fine (we monitor 200 student PCs and 100 staff machines seperately ...just for security reasons). We can block sites, block web access completely, allow only 1 app or web site, block applications, launch applications, chat, voice chat, show to screens, display screens, annotate on screen, etc etc. We have several classroom installs as well on teacher desks. They montor classes at the same time as us. Again, no problems. I'm not saying it's perfect, but for 1/10th of the price you're getting something that does the same job (well the management stuff we can do in different ways - there are many ways we can connect to PCs, and it's not something we need extra software to accomplish - 'tho the ability to log on to a whole suite of PCs as local admin simultaneously and hide the login from the screen is very handy). The teachers and ourselves find it an invaluable aid.
plexer Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 I have to say that Genevalogic have always been good at giving Kam good prices on their software to put to me and so far I am very pleased. I have Vision 6 fully deployed in 2 rooms at the moment and will be doing my other 2 I have it licenced for over easter. It's very easy now that I got the tech information from Genevalogic to enable me to embed my serial number etc... as a transform allowing me to push out the teacher application msi via gpo. The clients are easy enough as they stand. Ben
jumpinjamez Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 We use http://www2.smarttech.com/st/en-US/Products/SynchronEyes+Classroom+Management+Software/ works very well and appears fast on the network. the teachers like the Eyes to the front option and the bradcasting to the whole class. A bit of configuration is need to configure it for multiple IT rooms so one teacher does not pick up the whole school.
mrforgetful Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 We use Sanako Study 100 (formerly Imperata) and it's pretty rubbish with no changes made to it since we got it. No sorry there was 1 change, it had a rebrand when the company did.
Rozzer Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 We are currently testing a piece of software called impero which does all that netop does but has a great feature of monitoring everything a kid does. Ross edit: http://www.imperosoftware.com/impero.asp Thats the addess
Blind Posted March 24, 2007 Posted March 24, 2007 The impero feature listing looks impressive. Thanks for mentioning it. I'll have to play with a demo. It also appears that they are close to releasing a new version.
