My computer is causing the network to to go extremely SLOOOOW any ideas?

Only happens sporadically and only started yesterday.

 

Yesterday the network was going incredibly slow. Some investigation showed packets being dropped, not being able to ping the gateway and just general connectivity problems all round.

 

We narrowed it down to one port causing the issue and when we traced it back to the rooms embaressingly it turns out it's my PC causing the issue. Unplugging it fixes the issue straight away and plugging it back in after it's been unplugged doesn't seem to cause the issue again although it does pop up again randomly a few hours later.

 

Rebooted and just running a virus scan now but it's frustrating as I dont want to have to rebuild my PC with a shed load of things installed and set up.

 

Anyone got any decent ideas of how to find out what the issue is?

 

Came back after the weekend and happened out of nowhere. Haven't done anything on my PC recently so it's a total mystery.

Disable the WOL ( Magic Packet ) options and disable the power management / power save option on th enetwork card.

 

If its still the same - wondering if the network card is about to die, if you try a different network card , is it the same ?

run it on a linux liveCD to diagnose a hardware problem

dodgy NIC perhaps, try putting in a new NIC (PCI or whatever) and see if the problem persists - my second port of call would be to do a full Spyware and Virus scan and also check the switch port in which you are plugged into maybe try a different port as the port you are currently plugged into could be defective.

Could be your NIC is on its way out and flooding the network with packets.

If you can, try swapping NIC for a new one?

Do you have any torrent client installed? Some of them can flood ports and cause the problems you describe. Check for static IP’s as perhaps you have the same as another machine? Or if it’s DHCP force it into a unique static IP.

 

There is always the possibility the network card its self is faulty.

Install wireshark on that pc, and see what traffic it shows.

Sounds like a faulty NIC, replace it and you should be sorted. Malware, torrents and such are unlikely to generate enough broadcast packets to affect the whole network but a falty NIC spewing unidentified packets onto the wire will do so easily.

Finishing off a full virus \ spyware scan. Clean so far. Once that's run it's course I'll change out the NIC and see if it happens again.

Also check your IP. I have seen a tyop in a DHCP reservation give a desktop the gateway's IP with interesting results.

Last time I had this it was a really cheap usb webcam that when plugged in screwed the network via my pc. Utterly strange problem but verifiable.

My guess is like others have said is bad nic, bad nic drivers, spyware, virus, settings on nic like its on a fixed ip the same as a switch or server, or a piece of software is bombarding the server with traffic or a bad nic cable or the switch that its plugged into has fallen over.

 

I agree with wireshake to capture the packets and try running it through the free version of colasofts version of capsa it will analyze the capture and helps you understand it. We had loads of problems with our windows 2008 servers coming up with a event id 2012 and refusing to talk to the network randomly.
