[android] Reflashed my first Android phone

Just re-flashed my first Android phone, not my HTC Desire but an Orange San Francisco I picked up for the wife. Its now running CM7RC4. I was surprised at how easy it was, now thinking about giving Swedish Spring RLS4 a go. Anybody tried this firmware? Edited April 21, 2011 by ZeroHour

I'm running the 0.2 decrossed (cheque) ROM. It's been on a couple of weeks and has been very reliable. Very VERY stable. It feels like the battery life is better, too.

The only problem is that the radio frequencies are wrong (I think it goes from 77 Mhz to 80-something), but I never use the radio anyway.

 

I didn't have much luck with Cyanogen on the San Fransisco, it crashed every time I hung up a call. Sub-good.

 

The JJ ROM is well regarded so Swedish Spring should be a good 'un. Post if you've tried it....

 

Oh yes, before you flash, make sure you install the Clockwork recovery. This is a must; it makes changing ROMs a trivial task. It also means you can reflash a working ROM if everything goes the shape of the pear.

I've stuck with Cyanogen RC1 Nightly 25 for the past few weeks on my OSF.

I was previously applying every nightly update since RC1 was released due to the proximity bug! (which has long been fixed now).

 

I'm very happy with it.

Running Cyanogen 7 RC4 on my desire HD now. Its amazing! My battery life is unbelievable - I've been using it for emails, texts, games etc all day and its now been 6 and a half hours since its last charge and its still got 90% battery left. If I hammer it all day long I get 2 days without a charge. The original HTC non-sense gave me a max of 1.5days charge and thats if I didn't actually use it.

Is there a way to back up apps and settings and install them back onto the phone after a ROM swap?

I never bother but there are some apps which will do that. titanium backup, for example.

 

how are you getting on with swedish spring? does it fix the WiFi drop out problem?

 

Edit: the wifi reconnect problem seems OK on this ROM. It was a fiasco on the stock Orange ROM.

 

I might try this version (lightweight) then add whatever features I need.

Swedish Spring is good so far. Not had any WiFi problemas so far. Would like to add a circular battery mod if possible anyone know how to do this?

I installed the lightweight Swedish Spring (linked in my post above). I have the round battery indicator. It's a nice clean build, just install the things you need (like Google maps) afterwards.

 

First variant

 

This is a light version, intended for simplicity and ease of use.

 

* Removed most of the non-phone type apps, these can be selectively added by the user later if desired

* Removed VM Cache app and nofrills CPU - the ROM now defaults to ondemand governor AND is set to run the stock 600MHz max CPU frequency, but the lower 122.8MHz idle for reduced idle battery consumption

* HW accel default off - LauncherPro is noticeably smoother with this OFF - can be turned on in kk's "extra settings" app

* Stagefright ON (not http)

* Slightly revised GPS and WLAN configs

* Battery Circle mod included

* Gingerbread Wallpaper added to /system/sd/ for easy adoption

* Astro replaces Filer

* Radios removed (neither are great experiences) If you want a reasonable Radio use Andorko's 0.5 version rather than the RDS 0.6 version - seems OK on battery (famous last words)

* AOSP apps replace the ZTE efforts

* LauncherPro replaces Launcher2

Been running: [OLED+TFT] 09/Feb r12: MoDaCo Custom Froyo ROM download + Online Kitchen - Android @ MoDaCo for a week on my OSF. Seems stable & much better battery life than stock ROM.

I've been using Jap Jellyfish. I've never known such a good quality stable ROM, my uptime is amazing! Battery life is much better and the phone is so much faster than with the stock ROM.

Enjoy flashing your phones once you start you wont stop i run CM6 on my desire and find it a lot better, especially battery life.

 

I love that i can backup my ROMs now so i dont mind messing or installing lots of Roms.

I use ROM manager for this.

Anyone else had problems downloading apps from the marketplace once the phone has been flashed? I put CM7RC4 on and now there are a bunch of apps that won't download, including Google Maps, Robo Defense (full paid for version), if I restore my phone back to the HTC Desire rom then they download fine. I basically get the download icon appear for about a second and then dissapears, no error message.

Did the same, but they're not installed. Have also tried without selecting that option. New apps install fine, it just seems to be ones I had installed on with the HTC Desire ROM.

Had a play over the weekend, it's definitely a problem with CM7 RC4, I upgraded to the nightly build and that worked but was slow and buggy, which is to be expected really. Ended up sticking PirateRum on it, which works really nicely and gives my phone that aaaaarrrrrrrr factor

Try doing this

 

Download CM7 and gapps-gb-20110307-signed.zip to your SD card root.

Backup your SD Card (just in case )

 

Boot into Recovery and do a backup.

 

wipe cache partition.

wipe data/factory reset

Choose - install zip from sdcard

choose zip from sdcard (and load CM7)

choose zip from sdcard (and loaded gapps-gb-20110307-signed.zip)

 

After reboot, when asked which GApps to install just chose Gmail and Google Maps and decline any offers to automagically restore apps.

 

See if Market works OK now.

Fixed it, needed to create a 512Mb ext2 partition as the last partition on the SD card with no swap partition. All working rather nicely now :-)

You should try one of the Sense 3.0 ROMS which are coming out now. I moved to one at the weekend on my Desire HD and it is a real improvoment on Sense 2.xx. I do love CM, but Gingerbread is no good with Contacts IMHO- whenever I open a contact I find it loses all but the most basic information. Sense enables a multitude of extra fields in Contacts which are not there in CM/ GB which makes organising my life a little easier.

so if 3.1 is finaly getting proxy its a fair bet that it will work its wayto phones horay (now just need asus to make my damned transformer lol)
