chazzy2501 Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 Going in for another eye test this week (pressure test). I hadn't had my eyes tested in 8 years! Anyhow I've noticed lately that I'm finding it hard to look at the screens for to long (an hour or 2). I've removed my desktop wallpaper installed larger monitors (who needs an excuse) and I run with a 150% font size now! Any other tips for easing the strain on my eyes? btw do you ever get your eye test reimbursed by the school?
Robz Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 Mine gets done every two years, and county reimburse us part of the cost if not all. And I know its hard but try and take regular breaks and focus on something at a distance, i.e. out of a window RJ
kevbaz Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 School pays for our eye tests and i just had mine done again, after 3 years, i think 24 months is the norm though. once i have my perscription i order from glasses direct at a huge saving to highstreet prices

tech_guy Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 Go every year - I've just been diagnosed with the early stages of glaucoma - it was picked up by my optician last month and my eyes were fine this time last year. At least if it gets worse I'll get a free dog. 1
elsiegee40 Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 I go every two years normally, however my prescription for extreme short sight is now over-correcting my reading vision (age *sigh*), so the next visit will be just over 12 months to get my varifocals sorted out.

tech_guy Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 I hadn't consciously noticed anything prior to the visit to the opticians but after the test and speaking to the optician I became aware that there were problems that I hadn't realised the significance of - I have very high pressures in my eyes which now I can tell is an issue as I can feel it and my right optic nerve is now damaged and there is pain at times with it. I also have a problem with myodesopsia - 'floaters' - which I had always assumed was normal. I'm seeing the eye consultant at my local hospital now so hopefully the treatment will be successful.
plexer Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 I think my current interval is 18 months but basically whatever the optician says and when I get a reminder from them. School purchases a voucher from the LEA and that pays for the eye test. There has been a few threads on this in the past. Ben

I have the same issue as elsigee - my lenses are overcorrecting my short sight (which is pin-sharp without my lenses, but it upsets people when you carefully move a lens to the side to see something better!) so now I have varifocal lenses which certainly help.

I have narrow angle Galucoma (I didn't know there was more then one type until I had it!) I had been complainijng for years to my optition about loosing site (tunnel vision) randomly. Anyway they could never find anything as the pressure was normal. Until a locum was there for my eye test. He looked more closely and did lots of tests. (over two hours). Then said you may have narrow angle Glaucoma and reffered me. That was on the Wednesday. I was seen at the hospital on the Friday and they said yes you have We need to laser your eyes (put some extra holes in for drainage)' How about Monday?!!!!' So I had the first eye done Monday!! then the nexet the nexet week. Not a nice experience (pain but over so quick you can't even react!). My eyes are more stable now but I still get floaters and starts of loosing my periferal visiion. So I get them checked every few months. The tests are free and the optitions (changed) just say any doubts, come on in and get them checked. Alan

HarryMonkey Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 I go as often as my optician says. The school reimburses the full cost of my test. Last time round I was told I needed glasses for computer work so the school also paid a £40 contribution towards the cost.
Sirbendy Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 I went a month ago, after a longish delay (according to their records, 2003...oops). Net result - eyes stable, prescription unchanged. Had 2 new pairs of glasses (still made the original frame!), kept the previous ones too...baby daughters and glasses, argh.. I raised the subject of contacts too - I was told in 2003 that "no chance, not with your eyes...". The optician looked surprised and said "times change! Come back on the 9th April for a test fitting, free. See how you get on. We most certainly CAN do that..". Bonus!

I have not been for a test in far far too many years... oh dear.... ~When i got my eye test back in jan i mentioned "floaters" to the optician and he said they are nothing to worry about, its just the gel in your eye sometimes isnt perfectly clear
