Mobile phone signal blocking?

Anyone using any mobile phone signal blockers in their schools?

 

Is there such a thing? How easy is it to implement? I'm assuming there are laws regarding this too so what would we need to know there?

 

The easiest solution would be a blanket ban on mobile phones in school but naturally teachers have no backbone to enforce this so we want alternatives

Indeed. Build a giant Faraday cage around the school. Keeping with the theme of pioneers in the use and production of Electricity, place a giant Tesla Coil on the roof to zap any would be thieves.

Use a detector. Make sure you tell all students that if phones are not turned off then they will be discovered. Handy for during exams when invigilators are wandering around.

Mount steel mesh or chicken wire around all your walls, cover them with decorative wall board, and run a wire down to a good electrical ground, such as conduit pipe or water pipe. This will effectively block incoming or outgoing cell phone transmissions. After all, it is YOUR office or store, right? People can go outside to make calls, as they should.

Still illegal but I just happen to have stumbled across this China import site yesterday that has a wide selection of illegal signal jammers for all sorts, 3G, WiFi and GPS

you'll either end up bloacking or causing interferance with any Wi fi if you have it. besides although you said the teachers migth not have any backbone to enforece the rules then thats the real problem. teacher should be prepared to enforce rules.

 

I'd go with the dont take the P*** approch. State that mobile phones should be off out of site. secretly everyone keeps them switched on and the ones that fail to keep the ringer off gets it confiscated and any repeat offenders gets to visit the heads office.

 

unless you wrap the school in a metal tin can then your going to have to either break the law with signal jammers or have a little quid pro quo with the mobile phone holders.

In my opinion blocking phones is just silly in this day in age. 95% of your students will own one, and 85% of your students will bring it to school no matter what. My school just implements a 1 week confiscation policy. If a teacher sees a student texting during a lesson the phone is confiscated for a week with no questions. Works pretty well, also teaches our kids how to touchtype on their blackberries, hopefully most of them wont learn this art though and will stare down into their lap for the majority of the lesson. Classic tell tale sign!

 

I personally dont see that in this day in age you can outlaw phones. Kids are just too attached/used to them these days - the most you can do (sans going down the illegal blocker, or superbly awesome faraday cage route) is train your staff to be vigilant and get the SMT on board with making some sort of confiscation policy mandatory.

 

As most behaviour things go, its down to how reluctant your staff are at enforcing the rules. You will get 1 and 2 that are more with the students but hey ho, thats what we deal with on a daily basis no?

Silly question, but instead of blocking the actual signal, is there anything that can be done with a MDM to instruct connected phones to turn off the 2/3/4G antennae and force them into a WiFi only mode until they disconnect from your network?

How many get confiscated in a given week? Do you have any idea about the legality of confiscating something like that for a week? (genuine interest, btw)

How is this enforceable in any way, shape or form!? Students with younger siblings that they need to pick up, contact with parents to let them know they are home etc etc etc. Keeping for a week is unenforceable in any way!! I am surprised that local media haven't had a field day with parents complaining etc!
