andrew_91090 Posted March 1, 2011 Report Posted March 1, 2011 Hi, i was wondering if anyone can help me, i discovered that there is a virus on my laptop (system tools) stating that i had umpteen different virus on my laptop, after removing this virus i thought i'de be safe and do a virus scan with sophos, after 2% or 122 scanned items, it seems to freeze, can anyone help??? Thanks
john Posted March 1, 2011 Report Posted March 1, 2011 Have you tried it in safe mode? To enter that at startup after the BIOS screen before the windows loading screen comes up press F8 and select safe mode, and then try running Sophos (assuming it will run in Safe Mode as some do and some won't ) and give it a scan there.
timbo343 Posted March 1, 2011 Report Posted March 1, 2011 Is this a work laptop or a personal laptop? If the latter, install malware bytes, update it and run it, just to make sure the laptop is clean of spyware. You could always remove Sophos temporally, install another AV and see what happens then. Is it actually scanning files or is it scanning files in the memory first then getting stuck? It could be something which is starting up when the laptop starts up which is causing sophos to freeze.
michaelf Posted March 1, 2011 Report Posted March 1, 2011 You could try removing the drive, plugging it into a working station and scanning from there? This way you're bypassing anything still running in the infected OS along with any problems with the Sophos installation. If you still have issues after this I'd also advise reinstalling Sophos.
andrew_91090 Posted March 2, 2011 Author Report Posted March 2, 2011 unfortunately, non of these worked, Sophos does not run in safe mode, it is a stand alone laptop but it is connected to the network (currently disconnected due to viruses) and i don't want to place the hard drive into another working machine just incase it transfers over the viruses to that computer. Thanks for all your help but i think i'll just have to reformat it
MYK-IT Posted March 2, 2011 Report Posted March 2, 2011 have you tried the Sophos Bootable Anti-Virus CD-ROM? Sophos Bootable Anti-Virus: download and CD creation instructions 1
joe90bass Posted March 2, 2011 Report Posted March 2, 2011 have you tried the Sophos Bootable Anti-Virus CD-ROM? Sophos Bootable Anti-Virus: download and CD creation instructions +1, worked a treat when we had conficker here
difinity Posted March 2, 2011 Report Posted March 2, 2011 I'd use something like Malwarebytes to clean the infection. Sophos in my experience is poor at detecting and removing stuff once a machine is infected.
andrew_91090 Posted March 2, 2011 Author Report Posted March 2, 2011 i used malwarebytes but that found nothing either, i've reformatted it now, but i'll give that CD-ROM version a try next time something like this happens again. Thanks
