Little-Miss Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 Now, im pretty sure the server i call my DC (curricsvr1) has all the major rolls...well until today. When i started i had our curriculum DC replaced with another (the old DC is called Curricsvr3) curricsvr3 is supposed to just sit there a replicate and share a bit of the load. So anyway, i go in to turn the servers back on as there had been some electrical work back in there. Turn the DC on and then turned the others on. Went to logon to computer, cant find domain. Scratch head. Log on locally limited or no connectivity. So i reboot my cabs to see if my little gremlin was back but it didnt make a difference. I go to look at the servers but then realise the curric3 hadnt booted (it gets stuck at some menu now thanks to the guy before me, i had set the countdown to 0 but it seems to have lost the setting so now goes to some menu). So i rebooted Curric3 to windows...lo and behold its all up and running. Now the guy who setup the new server (i was new,scared and niave, got a company in to do it ) told me that all curric3 was doing was replicating and carrying some of the load....but its obviously a bit more involved then that!! Dont know how i havent had this problem before, but i guessed maybe i was putting 1 and 3 on around the same time. What worries me is that curricsvr3 is old and wont be around for very long....especially with the interesting noises it was making....if that goes i dont want it to bring the entire network down! Any tips?!
bodminman Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 Have a look in the Admin Tools menu and see if there are references to things like DNS and/or DHCP. If so open these up and have a look at the settings. We have an old rm CC3 server (which will be redundant in a few months time) that just ceases up every few weeks and we end up getting the same 'Limited or no connectivity' error. This CC3 server is looking after both DNS and DHCP. 1

Cache Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 What you might find is that after the servers have been off for a period of time, that the network won't bring it's self back up until it can replicate successfully with another DC - particularly the case with the server that holds the master roles as I found out over the summer. As there were 3 DC's at the time, I don't know whether I hit it unlucky with the replication attempts, but until the other 2 DC's had replicated with the 3rd DC, the network wouldn't initialise it's self. I could have that completely wrong though (but it's what happened to me)

plexer Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 The limited or no connectivity could point to dhcp. Have a look at the roles and services on each server start a configuration document. Also look at the fsmo roles and see which server has what. Adcheck is a quick way to check and can also report on replication functionality. Ben
Little-Miss Posted February 28, 2011 Author Posted February 28, 2011 Ok, Uber confused. Loaded DHCP on the offending server and that reckons it's inactive. The address leases seem to be old reservations, but nothing else. DNS seems to have some current records in, 155 of them.

Little-Miss Posted February 28, 2011 Author Posted February 28, 2011 If i go into the DNS managment screen, Curricsvr1 is the server listed at the top of the tree, so would that say to you that my DC is controlling DNS too. It might be that curricsvr1 is in charge of everything its meant to be and it might be like Cache said and that it threw a hissy because it couldnt replicate.
sister_annex Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 Shot in the dark but your CURRICSVR3 does not run WINS, if your domain is looking for a netbios name that may be the issue...
Little-Miss Posted February 28, 2011 Author Posted February 28, 2011 Ha! You might be on to something there! When looking at the WINS management bit it's status is set to responding and Curricsvr3 is the one listed! There's nothing in the Active Registration or Replication partner folders though.

sister_annex Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 If your CURRIC1 doesn't have WINS this may be the base of your issue. I would suggest installing WINS on CURRICSVR1 and setting both 3 and 1 to be a replication partners. This should replicate the entries across to the new server. Once this is up and replicating properly you will more than likely need to alter your DHCP settings to use the new WINS address (namely CURRICSVR1) and also alter any static Addresses that you may have. Again once you are confident that all the machines have moved (give it a few days) you can then turn off WINS on the old server. HTH 1
