I agree blowing it up afterwards is daft but the intial action makes sense

Why?! deactivated =/= safe IIRC, deactivated just means pulling the pin out won't blow it up. It's still explosive though. One good whack would have levelled the school.

One good whack would have levelled the school. A grenade is basically a chunk of metal with a space in the middle for explosives and a detonator. The pattern is designed to make the body disintigrate into small chunks of metal. Without the middle section it is totally harmless, unless you hit some one with it. A grenade is designed mainly to maim someone or kill. Maiming generally puts 3 people out of action, the victim and 2 people to care for him. It also has a psychological effect on the rest of the group. It would not level a building but would take some large chunks out of it.

Plenty of time for the teacher to jump on top of the offending device and take a hit for the team (as per William McFadzean VC, 1st July 1916). 1

After pausing for a heartbeat to consider my options I tossed it into the server room and waited. Not much happened. But given who lobbed it my pulse was racing for a while.

Intellectually I *knew* it was just a shell, however a small (but loud) part of me had some doubts. Better safe than sorry I figured. For the record at that point I was his peer rather than in a position of authority.
