TechSupp Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 Just had server pat tested and come restart server gets as far as applying computer settings and restarts! Any ideas where to go crom here? I've done the restart and pray bit but no joy. Lack of server knowledge means need advice quick.

EduTech Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 It might not get this far, but make sure you have the Server Operating System Media at hand as you may need to run a "Repair Install" to fix this. (system files). James.

TechSupp Posted February 8, 2011 Author Posted February 8, 2011 Update: its server 2003. Its now at a stage of booting and got further than it has before. Its letting me remote desktop on to it and now log on at the monitor, but still a brown trouser moment. That thought of we need an new server has become priority now! Suppose we were asking for a problem at some moment its running wsus, sophos, printers and everything else, p4 with 512 ram and its now 6 years old. Time to change. Thanksfor all suggesdions, great at time of great stress!

Its up and running now...breaths sigh of relief...anything i should check in mean time, its not going to be turned off till new server arrives.

3s-gtech Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 Note - do not allow the PAT tester in the server room. Servers are not portable appliances! Possible your hard disks are getting tired - nurse it along, don't restart it, and migrate the roles off it as soon as you can

Not necessarily, reset the corrupt log and see if anything appears.
TechSupp Posted February 8, 2011 Author Posted February 8, 2011 How do I reset the corrupt log? I cleared all the other event logs, but presume resetting a log is different. Thanks for all the support as usual. Only other problem was the main printer had dissapeared! Reinstalled and its fine (so far!). Will not be turning it off and new server is now a priority! Was needed anyway but its now jumped to the very top of the list. Could be HD's as had a server of the same type and age fail the other year.

I would if we did but its ac primary and space is a premium so it comes lower on the list and its historic in the fact that the networks just evolved from a simple.pc with a share in w98, to just being replaced by a server and by then all cables are in place and the servers home is just beneath a workbench. 3 out of my 4 schools are like that, the other which is also getting a new server at half term has a 6' cabinet which atbleats keeps everything central and safe. So on the pat testing side sometimes dont get any warning its being done, and dont know how i stand with it being near pupils and not in a secure room. On the one with a cabinet did manage 5 years without a test! :-)

3s-gtech Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 I can highly recommend Kell if you need a small server cabinet which will fit in a corner or under a desk. Should keep the cables away from testers/kids, fully lockable, and pretty quiet (mine has a screaming Dell 1550 inside and you can barely hear it).

sted Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 After yesterdays little escapade any more info on how you do this and what software required, maybe a dummys guide? download disk 2 vhd run disk 2 vhd on the pc you want to virtualize and save the resultant vhd somewhere like a network share usb hdd etc install some ms virualization tech on a pc be it virtual server virtual pc or enabling hyper v on a 2008/2008r2 box create a new vm and point it at a local copy of the vhd you have created as its hard drive. boot it up and try it main stumbliung point ive found is pre sp2 2003 boxes need service packing really as soon as opr the virtualization tools dont work (definately true of hyper v not 100% on vpv/v server 1
