bodminman Posted February 4, 2011 Report Posted February 4, 2011 I'm now at the end of my current deal with plusnet and want to look elsewhere because to be honest, I've not been very happy with the support when I've needed it. Also the prices aren't that great and they won't do any deals for me to make me stay. However, looking at my exchange on the SamKnows website, there is no presence from anyone else in the exchange! So when I do the comparisons I always have to contact to potential suppliers who then ramp up the costs because they have to lease stuff from BT. When you look the packages available I could half my current telephone and broadband costs over night if the exchange were updated. I just feel robbed!
MatthewL Posted February 4, 2011 Report Posted February 4, 2011 I am very surprised, I have never had a problem and always recommend them, I do not think their prices are to bad. Maybe you should get on their forums and express your concerns and one of their Customer Services bods will pick it up and look into it. I would not recommend leaving them they are one of the better providers I think. 1

I have always found their tech support to be excellent. I did have a problem with them a few years ago when I tried to move over to Sky, but they soon resolved everything, gave me a couple of months for free (even though the problem wasn't their fault) and I really struggle to find a reason to move away from them. 1
difinity Posted February 4, 2011 Report Posted February 4, 2011 no Virgin where you are bodminman ? 1
Haptic Posted February 4, 2011 Report Posted February 4, 2011 (edited) Hello, So what have you currently got exchange -wise? I have to say I am lucky enough to have the 50meg in Market Harborugh - I have no problems with it at all and it is pretty quick! Don't suppose that helps you though. I take it there in no chance of Virgin around your area? Do you live in a village then and if so have you looked ino the government schemes for broadband provision across these areas. Our sister company, TJames Telecoms and ourselves recently completed one like this in Wallingford......please see links below. It may be worth looking into. bodminman Posted February 4, 2011 Author Report Posted February 4, 2011 My issues were: 1) I moved house in Jan-10 and have BB with Plusnet and Phone with BT but wanted Plusnet to port the phone over so that I had it all on one bill. I was told that's fine and I would received a call when all done. I asked whether I'd need to speak to BT to cancel and they said no because they will do all that as part of the process. Well in May-10 BT took a payment from the wifes account and after a phone call they said it was for 3-months line rental. We explained that we'd moved house and phone provider and they said that the line at our previous address was still active and hadn't been cancelled. They said that it was our job to cancel it as Plusnet wouldn't have had the authority to do so. I made contact with Plusnet whi said that we should have made the cancellation call. I was fuming and requested that if my calls to plusnet regarding the transfer were recorded then I'd like to listen to them. They said that my conversations weren't recorded so there isn't anything that could be done. So £4 o odd quid down the drain! 2) Ofter moving house, I could get connect to the BB for 10 days. Not because it wasn't live, it was because the wireless router for some reason wasn't working. Firstly the sent me a replacement. I plugged it in and the connection light wasn't doing anything where-as my original router had this light on. So after several nights on the phone the said that they were sending a BT engineer out. I said that I couldn't get time off work but could nip home for 1/2 hour so I arranged for them to give me a call when they were at my house as I'm 5 minutes away. So on the day I get home after work, no call but a card through the door! So I ring Plusnet and made the same arrangements for a few days later. Same thing happened! So I suggested they just send me another router and try that one last time. The router arrived and we got connected straight away. The next saga was that they wanted to charge ne for the 2 routers! So the problem took another few telephone calls to sort out. I appreciate like with all things that we all have different experiences of the same thing! Thanks for listening!

Sirbendy Posted February 4, 2011 Report Posted February 4, 2011 I've used Plusnet for years, and never found them to be anything but helpful...even through 4 house moves, they've put up with me giving them hassle and moved me on my existing setup each time. The only issue we had was a bad upstream router, early last year that made everything very slow. 1
Hecate Posted February 4, 2011 Report Posted February 4, 2011 Wouldn't I like to be in your shoes - I can't even get broadband where I live. 1
aerospacemango Posted February 4, 2011 Report Posted February 4, 2011 I can't even get broadband where I live. I cry, a little, everytime I visit my sister's house in Wellingborough! They've got 50meg Virgin......I have 256k BT....... I only ever visit if I want something downloaded....but I think she's getting wise to that, and has capped me to 1GB a visit...... You should see the charges when I go over! 1
bodminman Posted February 4, 2011 Author Report Posted February 4, 2011 I just think it's appalling in that in this day and age in a country that has been one of the pioneers of the telecomms industry, that any of us have to be either without BB or have poor speeds! 1
aerospacemango Posted February 4, 2011 Report Posted February 4, 2011 Had BT not been sold off in the 80's, by the Thatcher Government, it would have re-invested it's profits back into the business. It is fair to suggest that we may now be looking at 100meg lines for ALL, and 10Gb lines as standard in most businesses. However, as the profits were taken out of the business by shareholder payouts, we are left with an archaic infrastructure, that no-one can afford to improve without massive government funds being made available.......Funds that this neo-Thatcherite Government will be loath to pass out. 1
bodminman Posted February 4, 2011 Author Report Posted February 4, 2011 Fair comment I'd say. Investment has gone and that it, simplz 1
36Degrees Posted February 4, 2011 Report Posted February 4, 2011 I wouldnt recommend Plusnet due to their very aggressive bandwith shaping and the download limits. I've just changed to their Pro package which has no traffic shaping and a 20GB limit which for me is more than enough. Only issue I'm having at the moment is an IP profile of 1250Kbps when BT claim I should get up to 2Mbps but any download speed above 800Kbps is acceptable! As I've only just moved on to ADSL2+ I have to wait for line to stabilise... 1
bodminman Posted February 4, 2011 Author Report Posted February 4, 2011 Update. I have just had a nce chat with a lass at Plusnet and explained that as a customer I was told that they wouldn't offer me anything to stay and therefore I wish to request my MAC code. She said that she was disappointed Plusnet wouldn't offer anything and look further into for me. I also explained that because of the issues I had with them earlier last year they would have to put the effort in if I were to stay a customer. She just rang me back and said that she can upgrade my current phone (eve & w/e) package and my broadband (capped at 10gb) to Anytime telephone and a 60gb broadband with a reduced cost of just under £6 per month. On top of that I'll just be on a month to month contract so should something else come along such as aliens landing in Barnby & upgrading the exchange, then I'll be free to do as I wish! Fair result I'd say but I've lost faith in aliens!
AngryTechnician Posted February 4, 2011 Report Posted February 4, 2011 (edited) That list of availability is availability of LLU service, not 'regular' ADSL (i.e. the BT Openreach service that most ISPs resell under their name). So when it says "Tiscali: Not available" it means that Tiscali's LLU service is not available there - but you can still the usual ADSL service from them, or from anyone else who sells ADSL on the BT network. Yep, but then they charge the earth because they say 'we can't offer you the savings because we don't have our kit in the exchange. therefore the price is going to be £xxx' in the case of TalkTalk, there package (if using there kit) was something like £20 for phone and BB, a decent package I thought. I rang them and by the time they added the additional charges the cost was over £30. It's a con!
plexer Posted February 4, 2011 Report Posted February 4, 2011 Well plusnet is owned by bt anyway. Ben 1

JPS Posted February 4, 2011 Report Posted February 4, 2011 Im with Plusnet and they have been really good. To be fair I havent really shopped about but I dont think I am likely to get much better. They gave me a fixed IP at no extra cost, which I think plenty of other providers wouldnt do. Having said all that, they did charge me £60 when I moved house. I was gonna write and complain but being the lazy sod that I am, I didn't bother in the end. I know other people that use them and they have been very positive. 1
