I tend to start off my day with two websites:

Set - I like this as a good way to wake me up.

Random word generator - I play about with the words and see what ideas come to mind. Sometimes I get ideas for stuff I'm currently working on, most of the time I just have interesting ideas that are a bit of fun.

I know I'm a bit eccentric however and was wondering what others do to start off their day when they get to the office?

I like to start the day with a coffee while reading the news online and catching up on discussion forums (not entirely work related!)

Although the above can vary because sometimes I often like to just get stuck in immediately to my days work and projects. Always with a coffee in hand though.. ;)

first thing is to try and get in through door before getting stopped/harassed by staff! Then it's into the server room for a quick that all is well. Then it's a glass of water and cereal bar, check helpdesk/EG, then the day begins!

Open main door, reset burglar alarm, record daily school status on answer machine, check the admin server backup, start the media server back up, turn on the visual display in the concourse, search the Office Manager's drawers for biscuits, make a cup of tea, check my emails, try and get as much done as I can before the teachers get in. Wednesdays, I help the Site Manager test the fire alarms. First Tuesday of each month I clean the Y5/Y6 projector filters and First Thursday the Y7 ones.

I find it good to have a couple of hours of routine before the phone starts ringing.

Routine? whats that? usually I end up with jobs to do before I even get to the office. If anyones got time to sit in the office, they've got too much time on their hands!

Summon the will power to get out of bed...

large mug of Coffee - none of the decaf nonsense!

Drive to to work

More Coffee..

Check Nagios to ensure the board is green..

Watch the clock

Change the odd toner here and there

Go home...

In through the door at 7:50. Switch on workstation. Change backup tape over. Get keys out of safe. Turn on photocopier, cctv monitor and printer. Make pot of tea. Phone colleague in her classroom to tell her the tea's made (I make it; she pours it!). Take absence messages off answerphone. Clear emails (mostly junk). (And until recently - playground gate duty from 8:45-8:55). Then make a start on work!

I'm a creature of habit - has to be done in this order or the day is ruined!

You have a clock? Lucky Man!

Everyone has a clock.... its down there in the bottom right corner (if you dont have one, you haven't turned your computer on!!!

Get in, turn laptop on and make a cup of coffee while it logs in. Runs perfect, but I haven't had any time to sit down and troubleshoot the sluggish start-up issue. Then I check my News Feeds in Thunderbird (particularly LA and Angry Tech) and get to work.

All times are approximate in mine...

6:00 - I wake up and put the tv on sky news and let the bright lights of it wake me up a bit more. I spend about half hour sitting in bed actually allowing my brain to wake up so I can function.

6:25 - Get laptop out, have a look at edugeek to see what has happened over night.

6:30 - I have a shower and take my time getting dried, as I don't like to rush.

7:00 - I go downstairs in my dressing gown, make a cuppa tea (or coffee if I have run out)

7:05 - I get dressed

7:15 - I get my stuff packed and ready for the day (laptop, mobile, lunch)

7:30 - If my daughter is with me over night, I wake her up

7:45 - If my daughter is not with me over night, she usually comes round mine (by way of her mother dropping her off) and I spend time with her

7:55 - We wake my mum so she can get up to take care of my daughter during the day

8:00 - Spend 10 mins getting the final bits together (keys, jacket, laptop bag, lunch etc) and get ready to go

8:10 - Kiss my daughter good bye and go to work

8:30 - Start the day looking at the event logs of the server, checking if it backed up ok/any power spikes or failures/check hard drives

8:45 - Switch on all wall sockets for the ICT suite (well I say switch on all wall sockets, as they are in pods, I just switch the pod sockets on and be done with it)

8:50 - Brief Ashman91 on the order of the day

9:00 - Have a cuppa tea and wait for the helpdesk tickets to roll in

Right. I have to get up in the morning at ten o'clock at night half an hour before I went to bed, drink a cup of sulphuric acid, work twenty-nine hours a day down school, and pay school for permission to come to work, and when I get home, my Dad and mother would kill me and dance about on my grave singing Hallelujah.

And you try and tell the young people of today that ..... they won't believe you.
