MNHughes Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 (edited) Hi Everyone, I have an android based phone and from some research I have found that Android doesn't support proxy, has anyone been able to get proxy support? I specifically thinking proxy settings for Wi-Fi and no proxy for modem settings or maybe a button to switch the proxy settings on and off. Edited April 21, 2011 by ZeroHour
LosOjos Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 Hi MNHughes, it's a well known flaw that Android has no proxy support (although I'm still debating whether this is a network choice rather than Google...) If you're somewhat of a gadget geek though (as I am), I highly recommend CyanogenMOD, it's a fantastic version of the OS that supports proxy. 1
crt404 Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 We've had a couple of teachers who have come to get internet access on their 'shiny new HTCs', only to be thoroughly disappointed. I don't believe anyone's found a way round it yet.

Absolutely - you should root and flash cyanogenmod anyway - let alone for proxy support
DarrenShan Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 I'm looking at a couple of Galaxy Tabs and the lack of proxy support has put and end that that idea - shame

JAB1a Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 (edited) There is an excellent android app on Market that is called "Transparent Proxy" It allows you to set a proxy up and also add authentication. I am not sure if it needs root but if it does just use one of the one click root tools like unenvoke etc nice and easy! I would recommend you root your phone anyway as there are SO many good apps out there and ROM that need root. Im using Redux RC1 GRH78 (Gingerbread) and its stunning, it uses Zeam instead of HTC Sense as a front end which is ok but not as well refined. There are also amazing wifi profiles that can be set up, I can not remeber the name of the software but it gives you slide bars on each ssid it sees and you can set the level of siginal that the phone will switch to another ssid, I wish there was a program for windows that was that easy. JAB1a Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Excellent, another excuse for you to root, you can always revert back if needed for warrenty
Hawkeyez Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 What you need is anProxy, works fine on a unrooted HTC. This has user authentication settings. We found, that with this, and any other Proxy util, we were getting the "Too many redirects". However, using OperaMini as a browser worked. Does mean that all the other apps I use (Facebook, TweetDeck etc) still dont work. Gary

LosOjos Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 exactly If you don't want to do it, don't do it, nobody is forcing you. But it is nice on the dark side
JJonas Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 I might use up a bit more of my contract first

Gary Sounds interesting, I will have a look at that app. I have not had any troubles when i was on a sense ROM to use the proxy app for every app without any problems. As for Warrenty, im sure if its in a state that you can not revert back to unrooted then the phone will be out of action and hardware will need replacing (not a root or unrooted issue), say the screen breaks...this is not affected by OS modifications with regard to warrenty as the device does not need to be operational to effect the repair (i.e does not need software checked or reconfigured by repair center). I can not think of a situation where this would be an issue apart from complete incompitence like taking the phone to a repair station because you can not find the @ key on the on screen keyboard as you have updated to another MIUI keyboard etc. I say it comes down to weather you want to use everything to do with your phone or just the basic. With root you can do full backup/restore of everything you have on your phone. You can increase the internal memory size of the phone to use the SD card (EXT partition), i have well over 200mb of apps installed, you can increase upto a size of 1.5Gb I think, Alot better than Froyo apps2sd can handle. There are always people that think you should never modify something that is already working fine so please dont argue with me which is better to mod or not to mod as this is not what im saying, I am just stating my experience that I have found my phone SO much more fun after I got root and i can not see a down side.
