L_Smith Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 Hello all. I dont know if any of you are F1 fans. I, myself are a massive fan so I thought I would kick this off. I have been pondering about the new season and what it will bring. The introduction of kers and the adjustable rear wing could really spice things up a bit in the overtaking department which IMO will be great for the sport. What does everyone else think about it? Do you think it will live up to the hype? Could it compete with last season? What are your predictions for it?
pscott Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 I think there will be several failiures of the rear wing system, but none on the Ferrari's as it's controlled by the FIA..... But yes, this new season has potential to be very interesting, especially with the introduction of the second Lotus team
sted Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 im not sure adjstable rear wing is a good idea esp as you need to be withoin 1 second to use it i believe i think its just overcomplicating things. Kers again why not do like indy/a1gp and have a push to pass button thats cheaper and can be used x times in a race so the drivers have to tactically decide to i use it to defend / attack / fastest lap i thing points should also be given for fastest lap/pole as it could give lower teams a shot at getting some points or a driver thats had a bad race could get something out of it

I do agree with you on that however I do think it will make things better from a spectator's POV. There will be much more overtaking, however I fear that the "good" cars will dominate every race because of it.
teejay Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 Should be interesting, from the rumour mill Mercedes and McLaren should be pretty strong as they have the best developed kers system. I also predict some accidents similar to Mark Webbers last year where he went airbourne as the closing speeds with kers and the adjustable rear wing will be pretty extreme.

They will every season but last season if you had a high flyer stuck behind some traffic in about 9th, then they sometimes struggled to get past. I don't think that will be an issue this season.

There will be much more overtaking, however I fear that the "good" cars will dominate every race because of it. im not sure it will make any difference as by the time the air from the car infront reaches the rear wing of the car behind (yes i know the idea is to be alongside but you have to gete there) its so messed up it might even make things worse. Solution to aero / overtaking is reduce/remove wings and use ground effect it disturbs the trailing air much less
DAZZD88 Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 Well I can't wait for the new F1 season. I'd hope that the Lotus controversy is resolved, it just devalues the Lotus name. I hope that the newer teams manage to catch up a bit in terms of overall speed and are more competitive. I also wanna see Schumi get his act together, last season there were numerous valid reasons that he struggled. The best seasons I have seen in recent years were 2008 and 2009. '08 was the year that traction control and other driver aids were removed and Melbourne was so eventful due to this. '09 was obviously the year of Brawn GP and their fantatsic story and also had the rise of Red Bull to the front of the grid.

aerospacemango Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 For the best part of 30 years, they have been saying that there's not as much overtaking as "in the old days"........ I don't see that the rear-wing will change all that much. I envisage this season to be almost as processional as the last.....BUT, I will be happy to come on here, and take the flak if I am wrong!

teejay Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 Well yes its better if you switch to the alternative commentary by David Croft and Anthony Davidson, Johnathan Leggard on the main commentary is just useless. The BBC must have spent a fortune hunting someone out who is even more useless than James Allen! Apparently we won't have to suffer with Leggard next year though, Brundle and Coulthard are meant to be teaming up, think I'll still stick to Crofty:rolleyes:

We still have Jake Humphries, DC and EJ in the build up though which is great because those three work well together. Ummmm....I think that goes for just about everything, doesn't it??? The other concern is that following an F3 accident back in 2003 that left him with a broken arm, should the latest injury complicate that fracture, it could seriously endanger or even destroy his F1 career.

It's not looking good for him to get back into his race seat at all this season let alone for the start. Trouble is, it leaves Renault with one of the, if not the weakest driver lineups in F1 - Senna and Petrov. Unless of course they go back on their words about Senna and give Heidfeld or De La Rosa a seat. Kubica is a world class act and will be big shoes to fill. Here's hoping he gets better soon, really want to see him race in a winning car.

We won't know until a week or so time if he's likely to get any use of his hand back, however it's almost certain he won't be racing this year and his career is still very much under threat. JHeaton Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 Really hope that things work out as well as possible for Kubica, he's a great guy and a great racer. It would be a great shame to see his career destroyed by this. In terms of Renault's situation, it's not ideal. They're the team with the most drivers available to them, but with the least experience (well, okay, Sauber do rival them to a small extent but Kobayashi has proven himself and Perez looks good). Senna was half-decent last season, but I (and a lot of others) felt that Chandhok was significantly better. The occasions where Senna got out-qualified by Yamamoto were embarrassing. Grosjean could be a big hit or a real waste. His only opportunity in F1 so far was in a Renault that was a dog to drive and had the KERS balance issue (Raikkonen mentioned at one point that it was no surprise that Fisichella, who had been on pole the race before he joined Ferrari, struggled to adapt), but his GP2 performances were fairly impressive at times. Ho Pin Tung doesn't really seem like he'd be worth taking a chance on; he leaves a lot to be desired. As has been mentioned above, Heidfeld and de la Rosa are both options, although Pedro has a contract with Pirelli now. Heidfeld might be the best bet, as he has recent experience and is proven to be a quality driver who can score podiums and bring the car home. Some alternatives might include Hulkenberg, despite his Force India contract and Chandhok although his flirting with Lotus might rule him out there...
