Internal IP Phone Systems

We're looking in to a new phone system too and am interested in Lync. The one question I have is how are people connecting to the outside world?

 

Are people using mainly a SIP Trunk provider, or using an ISDN30 Pri to SIP Gateway?

SIP Trunks are becoming more common, but many people still continue to keep the current ISDN Trunks connected to an Audiocodes Mediant Gateway.

I still have a combination of ISDN30 and SIP trunking. Increasingly the ISDN30 is only being used for backup purposes though. If you have reliable Internet connectivity there's no reason to use POTS and be stuck with one phone provider.

I am about to plan the migration off out E1 and BRI ISDN, we can have SIP via redundant ADSL and leasedline and reduce cost too.

 

May keep 1 BRI at each site for full failover.

You need at least one POTS for to handle emergency 999 calls.

Pure SIP Trunking here over our fibre line with a backup ADSL - its the best way to go

 

Make sure your backup ADSL supports fail over of the external IP that you use to talk to the SIP trunk as well though.

well the BRI could handel that , but we do have an analoug phone in reception on a PSTN in case the system goes down.

 

Our last failure was a remote failure on the ISDN30 at the main site, I routed outgoing calls over the ISDN2 at the second site (1Gb Wan link) altough that was only 4 channels so people were told EMERGANCY ONLY! And the DDI's did not work for incomming.. Foolish thing is we are with a 3rd party call plan company so BT don't want to get involved, and 3rd Party don't open till 9AM!

 

BT support is staggeringly one of the better ones!
