Best blogging site?

Would appreciate your opinions and experiences with this.

 

I currently use blogger, but find it a bit amaturish and would like to know the best site or route to go to improve this?

I use WordPress, and think it's fantastic. So extensible - you can just about add anything to it making it a fully featured CMS, but should just about stretch to blogging as well

Currently run my own install of wordpress on a vps. Hugely extensible and flexible, whilst also allowing you to trim it right back to be as small as you want too.

 

It'd be my choice anyway!

Thanks I have been looking at transferring to wordpress actually. I want to establish it as a respectable site (so my opinions will bring that down!) and so any hints/tips on that as well will be muchly appreciated.

Another vote for WordPress here - I use a load of customised templates for various blogs and sites I have. Check out Andreas Viklund for some free WordPress templates.

Mine is on WordPress.com. I have other blogs using WordPress on paid hosting, but being on WordPress.com takes all the admin hassle out of my hands for that one. You can use a site like tumblr which will give you a host service for free and have a load of integration services as well

You can add as many webpages as you like, thousands of free themes to choose from or you can use HTML to code your own from scratch, you can link it to your Facebook / Twitter account, RSS feeds.

 

Best of all it's free, and no adverts!

Tumblr is like modern myspace though in my experience - has even less respect than blogger!

Best process to get a VPS?

 

It really depends if you need one - I use one because I am a control freak when it comes to running my sites. I want to tweak apache etc...

 

If you want a VPS there are tonnes of companies around that offer them - there was a thread on here discussing them yesterday (do a search for VPS hosting).

 

If you only wish to just host your blog, you could look at shared hosting instead - which is cheaper and less hassle. CSNewMedia.co.uk offer this as a service (as well as VPS).

Another vote for WordPress here - I think I'm right in saying that you can export a site on the hosted free version and move it to a self-hosted version at a later date if you feel you're outgrowing the free version.

I use self-hosted Wordpress on my personal site (if only I had some content!). Do follow AngryTech's advice though, updating the software is easy but you need access to CHOWN in order to get uploads working securely (Never CHMOD 777!), something that is pretty rare on shared hosting.
