featured_spectre Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 Well Said...I might copy and paste that and email it to my staff!
pete Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 [pedant]Typo: "however small problem you have reported"[/pedant] -1 for not including something tongue-in-cheek like: a) "if your home computer was a car, it'd be the one covered in bumper stickers, an exhaust dragging on the ground and a boot full of dead ladies of negotiable virtue. The school computers, to continue the analogy, may be boring grey Mondeos, but they start every time, get good mpg and you don't have the stickers and full boot problem." b) "because when you're at home the worst that'll happen regarding your goat* problem is you may lose files if you don't back it up. At work (and depending on the serious of your goat-foo) we could get the whole server (with everyone's files on) confiscated by the police. So we're saving everyone else from your rural inclinations. Yes Jeff**, I'm talking to you." *no-one called Jeff works here. **yes, I do use this explanation. Goat jokes are fine, but you should know your audience beforehand.
AngryTechnician Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 Spot on as far as I'm concerned. The trolls on the TES forums won't like it, but that's the TES's problem until they sort out some proper moderation over there.

tom_newton Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 We have some users like that. Its even worse if they have their own AD at home (now everyone @ Smoothwall knows who this is) so they think its even easier for our poor sysadmin (who is an ex school tech, and an edugeek member I might add).

tom_newton Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 *bets they're developers* You bet wrong Sales! (Our dev office do more their own thing tbh)
Dos_Box Posted December 9, 2010 Author Posted December 9, 2010 You bet wrong Sales! (Our dev office do more their own thing tbh) Please tell me it's not Gav!
leco Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 Absolutely spot on - if I was still working at school I would certainly post it on the staff room notice board. On second thoughts I might "arrange" for that to happen anyway:)
mattx Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 (edited) Soon to be printed and placed on the notice boards, on the front of my Spice Works Portal page and may even include it as a mail out. Had to bite my tongue this afternoon at a member of staff who said those words to me..... Edited December 9, 2010 by mattx
tom_newton Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 Please tell me it's not Gav! Definitely NOT Gav
PiqueABoo Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 A small criticism on the "divide": I've never noticed the implied correlation between s/w company size and s/w quality. Some big companies have caused me lots of pain, some small companies have produced "gems" (largely I suspect because they're not bogged down with big company overheads and manglement/political infrastructure). It all seems pretty random, however the "it's your fault flaky product X isn't working" meme is very predictable.

I thought/hoped that DB was just using the range of sizes to illustrate "range" rather than as an indicator of likely quality.

It called the 'Sun' system of jounalism.
PiqueABoo Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 Give me a break. That was one...I didn't say anything about the rest Consider it a compulsion: What we haven't been getting from some of those big shiny R&D depts., and at what expense, has been one of my buttons for quite a while now.
Zenden Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 great article, couldnt agree more with everything you have said there. keep up the good work

witch Posted December 10, 2010 Posted December 10, 2010 Very good article - would love to print it out and affix to staff notice board - but if I did, certain members of staff would just comment that I was making excuses for not being able to fix problems...
mattx Posted December 10, 2010 Posted December 10, 2010 Article is now on display on two notice boards - just about to get the single page .PDF out and then make a link to it from our Spice Works Portal front page.
LosOjos Posted December 16, 2010 Posted December 16, 2010 the link's dead I knew there was a reason I downloaded a copy: ICT_i41.pdf 3
