SCART to HDMI cables

I'm looking to upgrade my front room tv from the crt model it currently is to an LED. My current setup requires that I have two SCART sockets in the back of the tv, one from the (old) Sky+ box, and one to a DVD recorder/5.1 receiver and I can't afford to upgrade the entire package. The LED tvs I've seen only have one SCART socket, but plenty of HDMI sockets. I know that I can buy SCART to HDMI cables, but will that effect the quality of the signal?

cant you plug your dvd player into the input scart on your sky box and veiw via your sky box ?

I have seen these in use. They tend to loose the quality. They are pretty useless.

 

Does the LED TV have those little around video & audio cables the White, Red & Yellow ones?

I would use the scart socket for the sky box and either as per FN-GM use the RCA type connectors ( red, white and yellow ) as there are scart to RCA convertors

 

 

That or you can if you have a computer near by use a cable to connect the computer to the telly via HDMI

 

Currently I have / use a DVI-D to HDMI cable ( my computer has DVI-D ) as in dual link as apposed to single link DVI

some of the new TV's have done away with the RCA inputs, dont think the op mentioned needing to connect a pc fella ?

I know that but if said PC has dvd then maybe another way to play dvd's

 

Had a look on fleabay for scart to hdmi and they are around the £50 mark.

 

Unless you have a games console that can play dvd's as you can normally hook those up via HDMI ie PS3 ( possibly xbox 360 )

Why not try having a whinge to sky about prices, threaten to leave etc and see if they'll cut you a good deal on an HD sky box.

I got an offer through from Sky for a free HD box if I took the HD service for a year.

For me a good solution would be (without spending too much money) would be to take the output of your sky box to the input of your DVD recorder and then the output of the DVD recorder to the input of your TV. This way you can also record your SKY programmes onto DVD for watching elsewhere. In all honesty though I'd probably upgrade your DVD recorder to a Blu-ray player.

I heard somewhere, may have been here, that Blu-Ray disks recorded at home will only play on the recorder they were recorded on. Can you confirm/refute this?

I can't but ifyou think about it,it'd be pretty pointless if it were true. I shall do some research and get back to you.

So far I've found zero evidence to confirm or deny whether this is true or not. I would suggesst though that there will be no problem with compatibility on other systems but you ask this in store.

It isn't about compatibility, it is about licence conditions, and mechanical copyright protection.

I'm afraid that Sky+ HD is out of the question at the moment with two daughters at university, unless I could get the box free without having to take up the HD subscription. I'll borrow one of the RCA connectors from work and see how it works.
