jackvine Posted October 25, 2010 Posted October 25, 2010 Hi All Not really sure where to start ! Working at primary school at moment thats running a old 2003 standard edition server, it does not have any service pack installed ! and when someone did try and install a service pack it corrupted the server ! so had to be restored. School now has a new server so need to be migrated across but all the migration tools i found only work if the service packs are installed ! Also the server is running Ranger 5, will this work on 2008 R2 ? Plus I tried installing Sophos didnt work so called synetrixs and they have told me it will be christmas before Enterprise Manager V 4 will be avalible and working on 2008R2. So not really sure what to do ! and advice welcome !
ChrisH Posted October 25, 2010 Posted October 25, 2010 It might be less work to start from scratch. Copy the data off. Set the view in AD users & computers so you can get the columns for all the info you need such as name, username etc and export that view to use as the base of csv for creating new users. Other than that maybe try a physical to virtual of the server and try and work on the VM. Is there enough space left on the HD to install the service packs? Get a good backup preferably an image if you can.

Yeah there is 6 Gb plus left on the HDs so should be enough space for service packs ! I left the server backing up tonight when I left, as when I checked no one had backed it up for 6 months!
SYNACK Posted October 26, 2010 Posted October 26, 2010 The other way to go would be to install another copy of 2003 on a VM and update that to the latest SP then join it to the domain as an AD server, migrate everything across to that, demote the old one then migrate to the new server from there. Probably easier and cleaner to start from scratch though.
pagelad Posted January 28, 2011 Posted January 28, 2011 AFAIK Ranger 5 doesn't support 2008R2. I work in a Primary and we are going down the upgrade route also and currently have Ranger 5. Im just going to take all the data off and load on from scratch. Its a good opportunity to add some more memory and add some more disks as well. We never paid for the yearly upgrade fee so its looking like circa £1000 for the upgrade to Ranger 7
strawberry Posted January 28, 2011 Posted January 28, 2011 Best thing to do is buy new hardware and migrate over the roles as and when you can. Might eb worthwhile looking at virtualisation , buy one or 2 decent servers and virtualise your existing one.
sted Posted January 28, 2011 Posted January 28, 2011 as above might be worth doing a disk to vhd of the old server and try service packing that(after making a copy) then if you kill a vhd who cares (just do it with the virtual nic not connected to the network)
fredquimby Posted January 28, 2011 Posted January 28, 2011 We had a similar problem, and we went for a new domain and transfered the users accross using the ADMT tools, we have tested the transfer in a lab setup but haven't done it live yet.
