nickbro Posted October 8, 2010 Posted October 8, 2010 Fax machines can use analogue modems, we have one in school. Our franking machine using an analogue modem to get funds. (Costs extra for the PC software)

elsiegee40 Posted October 8, 2010 Posted October 8, 2010 With Nat West we used the modem installed on the PC... though those are only on the oldest PCs these days. I guess you'd have to look at an external one or fit a card on most PCs these days. We had the modem dial out through the Bursar's extension socket (used a splitter thing so the phone and the modem could share the socket), so she couldn't use her phone and pay us simultaneously.

I was told that they would be getting new software soon and wouldn't need the modem anymore, until then we will wait and see. Ours just split off from the finance fax machine and use that line.

The line filtering can and does limit the connection rate though. As to actually needing a modem, wow, our banking stuff moved off modems upwards of 6 years ago.

Must admit I remember having a dial up modem in finance where I used to work for doing online banking stuff very weird in 2008 that you still need something for that, what was more weirder was the PC was Windows 95 it was on as well!

tom_newton Posted October 9, 2010 Posted October 9, 2010 Only for franking money-adding (which refuses to talk via the ATA any more, so has to have a temporary extension cable to the server room) and the faxes (outbound) - again these are on ATAs so they go over SIP

They have an pretty good Internet-based alternative now, but some places (including our Bursary) have not yet had the time or inclination to retrain and make the switch.

I know it scares me, it still does not stop us being charged 40% more minimum thanks to our technofobic governement but it does feel good to be out in the lead for a change. User3204 Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 Heh, I've just had to buy a new USB Modem... for the same reason as stated above, finance, blah, Barclays Business manager. I keep saying "internet banking" to them, but nothing ever happens.
srochford Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 Still some modems here - NASA JPL uses one to connect with some hardware we have (they have a proper internet connection but the modem is there as backup!)
