Auto shutdown when network cable is unplugged

We have a program called NetControl 2 installed on over 10 computers at a school to monitor whats going on.

 

One of the issues we are facing is that the students have worked out that they can load their games (not allowed) and then pull the network cable out from the back of the desktop.

 

I am looking for a solution that forces the computer to shut down when said plug has been pulled out, preferable one that can be deployed via group policy. Any ideas?

Can't help on that, but have you considered what might happen if a switch was to suddenly restart or something? Windows would see that as a cable being unplugged and restart so whereas before you may have had a room offline for 30 seconds you now have a room full of lost work

Further, in implementing the shut down, I'd have thought it would make starting up potentially challenging. Especially if out on the bench for repair.

 

Our monitoring software (Ranger Remote Control / NSS) can be configured to alert teacher/tech if it looses communication with a PC. Would that help?

Our students found a way to prevent the login script from loading by unplugging the network cable just after the login. But since we've started using a product called Impero we've found that it can actually lock the students computer when the network cable is pulled out.

Yes, we're using impero. It has that feature as an option. As soon as it loses network connection, it locks the screen with a message saying why. As soon as the cable is plugged in again, it unlocks again.

 

Impero is a really good system (from a teacher's point of view - i can't speak for admins) I heartily endorse it!

I have a GPO for Windows XP when you unplug a network cable the PC auto shutsdown, however it doesn't work for Windows 7

I had a script that some one made on here that binds to a network drive , if the drive is not there it logs off .

 

Problem i had was that i forgot about it and made some exam account and not linking the drive !

There is a program on here by one of our members that blocks the screens when this happens.

 

Alternatively you could look at physical blocks to them doing such as the panduit lock-in devices PSL-DCPL
