Crt disposal

Have I got this right? My head was trying to get me to throw some CRT monitors away at th end of term and as a quick solution suggested they could go to the local household waste recycling/tip.

 

I said that as we are classed as a business not household, we had to dispose of our monitors via a company that would give a WEEE certificate and that we couldn't just dump them at the local tip. Does anyone know the legal position for schools disposing of IT waste?

Our local tip would only take CRT screens if they were private owned not business (or education). Used a company last year that only charged £75.00 for around 20 items (fully certified). AFAIK you'll need to make sure you're in a position to prove equipment has been disposed of responsibly if ever you need to (we have many WEEE certficates from several disposals over recent years). There are a fair few companies that will collect anything for free so definately don't pay anyone to take anything away. Some companies are picky and want "X spec desktops" (I guess these are the ones that refurb equipment and sell it on themself), however there are enough companies that will take anything for free. Quick search should return these companies.

Definitely WEEE. If a council inspector tied one to your school, the fine could be significant.

Thanks everyone, we used a local company last time that only charged £15 for any quantity of monitors and provided us with the Weee paperwork, I just needed to check I had my facts right as I was under immense pressure from the head and deputy to dispose of the monitors there and then.

 

I stood my ground and said if one of our monitors turned up in a layby somewhere - I won't be the one going to prison as I'm too far down the food chain.

That's who we used last year so I can definitely recommend them. If they take away any desktops or laptops, after a few weeks they will send you a data destruction certificate.

Not usually as the computers don't hold any personal data anyway. If there is any doubt that they do then yes.

Drop these guys a line......Am just in the process of getting them in, and they don't charge.

 

Also, they do HD wipes for free.

 

I think that the more we can get for free....the less is taken out of our budget, so it has to be worth investigating.

We have a script that deletes them all on start up on the classroom PCs so it is only the admin machines and laptops that we need worry about.

thats a good idea, might nick that one!

 

technically any user's profile that logged on the last time the computer was on would still be on there, if the script operates at startup and not shutdown.
