CC3, USB Drives and a headache...

Hello,

 

I have searched the forum but I can't seem to find this. I there is a post already I apologise.

 

Basically I have some Kingston usb pens and I want to make them into CC3 Build Disks to replace the floppy drives we are currently using. I can't seem to find a way to make them emulate a floppy drive.

 

They need to stay big enough to contain all drivers for our various machines.

 

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

can't remember the name of them - someone running rm will probably post but there are usb drives you can get that emulate floppies that you can use - they have a little switch on the side to switch between emulation modes.

Look on rm site and then look on google where you can buy em cheaper than rm probably.

We have one of these but the damn thing is only like 1.4mb when you make it emulate a floppy which is no use for making a "one disk builds all" type disk

Also you can buy the usb pendrives which actually have a switch to enable floppy emulation therefore the need to create a floppy emulation usb yourself is no longer required.

We have a pen drive with a switch on but as I said earlier they are too small for what we require.

 

I have looked at that link before but I can't seem to find a format utility to do the job... The ones they have as examples seem to come with specific pendrives. Does anyone know of a generic one?

We have 2 or 3 different NETAC drives depending on which machines we are building at the time.

 

It seemed to be the best option.

The HP USB formatting tool, can format usb drives into bootable system drives (Why windows prevents that is beyond me....) then you should be able to just stick the files from the floppy on them (Bios would need to support USB booting)

I tried to do this quite a few times before we *cough* upgraded *cough* to CC$ (at which point you could use WDS), there is an RM tool in their Knoledge Libary which might help-

IIRC, the HP USB formatting tool doesn't work at all for building CC3 computers. I can't remember the reason, but I vaguely remember it not working when I last tried it about 4-5 years ago.

 

What about using MDT 2010 to "SmartClient" PCs? This would enable you to create a Windows PE-based bootable USB flash drive that can either install Windows the normal way or restore an image of Windows which has been sysprep'd previously by MDT. The best thing about using MDT is that it uses Windows drivers (it will install these automatically for you once you have added them to the DeploymentShare) and you won't be limited to the capacity of a floppy disk (or floppy disk sized flash drives).

I used an RM tool that I got from their webpage it took some digging but it seems to work with the majority of USB pen drives, except Sony and some other that include software such as the sandisk ones. I downloaded the "RMPrepUSB_2.0.737_REL.zip" and its worked nicely once I got to grips with the interface. I also purchased some lexar firefly drives to use which again I can confrim work well too. I think there is a PDF how to included in the zip file. If you have a problem PM me
