VLC Media Player v1.1.1 is out - Lots of bugs fixed!

Another update to install over the summer holidays.

 

VideoLAN and the VLC development team are proud to present VLC 1.1.1, the first bugfix release of the VLC 1.1.x branch.

 

After almost one month and more than 17 million downloads of the VLC 1.1.0, this release introduces numerous fixes and small improvements over VLC 1.1.0.

Does this fix the font caching error some people were experiencing?

Unfortunately not. This is meant to be fixed in v1.1.4 which will be released at the end of September.

VLC v1.1.4 has been released earlier than expected, but it doesn't contain a fix for the font caching issue.

 

What's new in v1.1.4

• A bit after the 1.1.3, an important security issue was discovery in most windows applications, and VLC is affected too. Since security issues matters, here is a new release, targeted for the Windows platform!
  
• Windows DLL loading security issue, in Qt4 and dmo modules - VideoLAN-SA-1005
  
• Fix for folders opening issue on Windows

VLC v1.1.5 has just been released, but it still doesn't contain a fix for the font cache bug. The developers have changed the priority to high so hopefully v1.1.6 will have it in a couple of weeks time.

• 1000 Web-shows listing integrated inside VLC's playlist, provided by Channels.com
  
• New Game Music Emu (GME) support
  
• Windows SMB security issue - VideoLAN-SA-1006

And no un-installer. I can deploy this over the network but I cant un-install it from 400 computers due to the fact there's no automated un-installer

It looks like the VLC developers aren't interested in fixing this bug. Given their attitude I doubt it will ever be fixed.

One thing is obvious to me: VLC developers (myself included) are not in any hurry to fix corporate-only user problems on their free time, especially on Windows.

 

Normal users do not use remote home directories.

They are developing it for you for nothing, in their own free time. Whining about their attitude doesn't help anybody; a patch is always much better received.

Given that 1.1.6 just hit with no fix in sight, I'm actually seriously considering that. I have no idea what sort of money we'd be talking about, so have asked on the thread for this bug on the VLC forums. Assuming I get a reasonable reply, would anyone else be interested in chipping in?

I doubt it - Apple are never going to allow apps without any DRM in the App Store. However, if you jailbreak your phone you can still get it from Cydia or Apptrackr.

But apple allow you to pay to have non DRM music ??

 

If there is a work around - does the work around only apply registry settings or what exactly, might be able to use something like reg shot and push out the reg changes if so, if its files and other items then might take a bit more work but am sure you could use GPO to push out the relevant changes

It is unlikely as Apples policies for the app store run counter to the GPL and one of their stroppy developers.

Just a note, this seems to be working in my portable apps version and only shows up once in a blue moon now.

Forcing the standard (non-portable) version of VLC to use the dummy text renderer via a command-line switch (--text-renderer=dummy) seems to fix this issue too. If you add this to the start menu shortcut and any file-types which are associated with VLC you shouldn't see the "building font cache" popup at all. It would be nice to have the bug fixed properly though, as this is just a workaround.

If you still have the IPA file saved on your Mac, you should be okay (at least in theory).
