Me and the wife are looking to do a 1 night camp to see if we enjoy it on Saturday. Can anybody recommend a good but fairly cheap camp site for a tent and 2 people. Be good it there's stuff to do locally like walks and such.

 

Looking for nowhere south of North Yorkshire. Lakes is fine too.

Have a look around Malham, I believe there are a couple in that area, greats walks around Malham Tarn and Cove. The cove is spectacular.

Go for it, but check the weather forecast, the North West was looking a bit damp at the weekend according to the BBC weather forecast last night.... might not be good for a first outing... unless you are a seasoned Lake District visitor in which case you will be used to it

 

We're off to Beadnell Bay on the North East Coast for the weekend, camping & caravan club site across the road from the beach. Cheap site, basic(very clean) facilities. Walks along the beach. Nice fish & chip shop 200m from site....

 

Also, Dunstan Hill (near Craster) another camping & caravan club site nice too, walking into Craster or along the beach to Dunstanburgh Castle.

 

A small confession though... we will be in a motorhome.... too old for sleeping on the ground under 'canvas'

It's near (within walking distance) Appleby - also try High Cup Nick as a walk.

Glenridding in Cumbria has a great campsite (and nice pubs too!) with full showers etc, as does Wasdale Head.

Everywhere only took 2 night min bookings, except this one so this is where we have booked. Do they have showers/toilets etc as website doesnt say.

 

Plus side is Mam and Dad are in Penrith that day too (they are there now) so could meet up and pinch their walking boots lol.

Yeah theres plenty of shower blocks, all of which you need a key to access. Theres a nice river to walk along. If you head over the fence next to the big kids park (theres 2 parks) you can walk through the woods to what is (locally) known as the 2 bridges. Its a nice walk when its warm. If you go abit further you end up in Lowther dear park (id guess 2 miles total).

 

Penrith isnt too far either. When i was younger we used to go to the clubs in penrith (very chav) and walk back. Its a fair walk but perfectly doable if you dont mind the exercise.

Theres a pub on site which stays open late when busy, reasonable prices. The food is alright, not brilliant. I havnt been myself but most people go for food at the beehive pub which is situated between Shap bridge and the entrance to lowther park.

I do hope you lot trying camping for the first time have not bought the "camping starter packs" offered by many shops. I camp often over the summer and the occasional weekend too, I have two tents, one for week long stays, the other for weekends.

 

Really enjoy the fact it is your bed you are sleeping on, next step will be (when I get there) a campervan of my own, so home is where you park it...

Yes have been to all of them over at Pooley Bridge over the years, have been virtually everywhere in this country camping but I like the real camping side, by a river or stream and get washed in the water from them or in them if deep enough.

 

But for you starting off its good to start on such a site that you have chosen, good luck and just enjoy yourself. Remember its the open air and the freedom that you are getting not home comforts.

Nah - my brother is a biker who rides to all the races like silverstone and he already has all the gear. Just pinched it off him - he had his second kid on Monday so I doubt he'll be using it for a while.

 

I've done the camping thing before, even like Bossman where we pitched in a farmers field in the middle of nowhere next to a river. It's the wife who wants to see if she likes it.

Just hope this wind isn't the same over there - it's gale force here at the minute, and don't fancy putting a strange tent up with it blowing all over the place. Can already feel the heated discussions with the wife when she does something wrong, or not quick enough.

Naturally when I search for campsites I use a campsite search site Only jesting, but I did stumble on that when the idea first came about and is pretty much the best one I've come across so far.

Yes, you can't beat good old wildcamping!

 

Foxes Tarn next to Scafell was a good one!

 

Putting up a tent in the wind is the most annoying thing in the world.

 

This has been confirmed by scientists in several studies.

 

More so for the cheap average tents! (ie Tent starter packs, or tunnel tents). For the hardened camper go for Terra Nova, the ultimate being the Quasar Tent, or use a bivi!

Its a good site but they sometimes hide or don't post unfavourable reviews of some of their sponsored or featured sites.

 

True and like a lot of forums there are a few 'know it alls' that post regularly, but in general the info is useful once you sift out the rubbish posts I've not been out in the tent for a while as we tend to use the caravan more, especially in winter

If the review is hidded or not posted then I'd probably go anyway
