Moving Junior Librarian from one PC to another...

It's a networked PC, well it was. I was never able to completely remove Winsuite from it so have had some issues. The database is held on the machine itself not on the server. This is my first dealings with it. I've purchased a new computer ready for it and was just wondering if anyone else had done it before?

I've done it a few times.

 

Get the new machine set up and JL + any extras + Hambase updates installed. Then back up the database on the old machine to a key (or whatever) and import. (Not even sure that you need to install the latest Hambase as it's on the backup).

I have but using the installation disk. I don't recall any problems.

If you don't have the installation disc, you can d/l it from MLS (assuming that you have a valid subscription).

Or schedule a network backup in JL. (Though the Library service of our LEA doesn't like us doing this).

I would agree - I did exactly that about a year ago - as far as I know it was quite straight forward. You can just ring the support line - the guys are really nice and very helpful, and will send you the instructions and help you sort it out, practically going through it step by step

Ous is run as a local installation, with the database automatically backed up to the server when JL is closed. the library computer is wireless and is quite a flaky connection, so JL will carry on working with no network connection. Transferring it to another computer is a peice of cake - make sure you install jl on the new computer with the same updates as you have on the original, then restoring the new setup takes minutes.

isnt it just a case of edit the ini file to point to \\server\jl3$ then copy contents of its old location to the above share?

Yup it is the case, just backup the DB of the machine and then edit the local .ini file to point JL to the network share for the DB. But on a side note any one managed to get 2 machines using the same DB at the same time?? Want to use 2 machines and the network DB.

Erm with the barcode & finger print scanner? Just want 2 machines in the library I keep getting a jet DB error, unless logged on as an admin. Not high on the list of priorties atm, but something for Sept.

well no but they can be moved if needed and books can have availability checked from a remote location/reviews written etc

I'm getting the same error. Anybody manage a fix? The mdb is accessible to all users, not sure where else to look.

 

"Unable to open the library database at the location c:\ blah blah

 

Error (the microsoft jet database engine cannot open the file ". It is already opened exclusively by another user or you need permission to view its data.).

 

 

Nobody else is looking at that file and the perms are open.
