they are hong kong based but i have used twice (same lens - dropped the first doh)

I'm after one myself but I can't spend the cash at the moment, :(.

dont spend loads on equip, i have just finished my kit now (canon 450d, 18-55, 50 1.8, 70-200 + jessops flash ... oh and a bag of fleabay) i have a lens for each occasion and the power to use it, i just need the experience and knowledge to use it.

 

Which 70-200 do you have? And was it affordable? I only ask because I have a 400D, with the 18-55, and the same 50, so a big zoom lens is what I need next :)

i quite like canons own 55-250 with image stablization i also have their 90-300mm non image stabalized lense but image stabilazation is damned handy

 

Hit the nail on the head. RAW + Adobe Lightroom is a great combo. The noise reduction in Lightroom 3 is powered by unicorns :D

 

and just how much does lightroom cost id guess being adobe its more than id like esp as i now use paint.net as it does what i want and is free (and deploys over networks quite happily so i have the same software everywhere lol)

Go to the camera price buster site mentioned above.

Search for the Canon 18-135mm IS lens, which I've seen for about £250. This is a bargain - the RRP is £499. If there was only one lens you need, this would be it. With the 1.6x magnification factor of your camera, the 35mm equivalent zoom range would be 29-216mm, which is an excellent range.

 

Although the quality isn't as good as an L lens (obviously), it's an all-round OK lens and it has image stabilisation which is worth 4 stops of light.

 

Stick your 18-55 lens on ebay for a few quid.

 

Not a bad idea, will think about that, thanks. Would be especially useful for travelling because it would mean I wouldnt need both the 18-55 (which isnt great to start with, I find myself rarely using it) and something bigger

Having the right software to open and edit RAW photos is half of the equation. Without it, just stick to JPEG.

 

The software obviously helps.... Adobe PhotoShop Lightroom for me :)

 

iirc slows down the number of shots you can take in quick succession

 

It doesn't so much slow down the speed but fill the buffer quicker. Personally, I have a 1Ds so it's less of a problem :p

I have the 70-200 f2.8L IS and it is truly awesome. It even sounds fast when you take the shot! Fleabay bargain too at £830-odd!!!

 

I have to agree with jinnantonix too, once you use L-series lenses there is no going back! I need to take a shot of all my gear... I hate to think of how much I spend on photography!

i used them for my nifty 50 (50mm 1.8 canon)only£75 when as its £99 most places

I brought a D3000 last week from a reptile forum lol... Anyway got the D3000 (2 months old) 18-55mm lense, 55-200mm lense for £300 . . . . bizargin!

Had two Tamron lenses and neither were particularly great (IIRC 30-300 which constantly locked up my old 300D and the 90mm macro lens that I'm about to flog - just not on a par with the L-glass). I wouldn't say not to buy Tamron but, for the price difference, there's much better out there.

As you own a nikon little miss you could always go for a some old Manual Focus lenses. Nikon have used the same "F" lens mount since there first Film SLR in the 70's. So as long as you are happy with manual focusing and setting the apeture manually you can get some real bargains.

By the way, how do you find the connection with the 420EX? Mine's playing up.

 

Fine, although I haven't really used it much since I got my 550EX.

 

As for costing a small fortune, if you shop wisely you will be surprised. For instance my 1Ds cost the same as a similar age 5D, camera bag prices are perminently getting slashed at Warehouse Express and they are pennies on Fleabay, my 500mm came with a flight case AND a Lens Trekker Lowepro bag(!) and I always seem to pick up lenses for £££££s less than they should be!

 

BTW... the two lenses on Flickr at the mo will be up for sale soon ;) (Tamron 90mm f2.8 macro and Canon EF 20-35mm f3.5-5.6)
