tech_guy Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 We're booting our kids out at 2:40pm today so they can get home to watch the match.....d'oh! Anyone else's school doing the same?
buzzard Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 two of my nieces (at diff schools) are also being sent home early, if they can't be collected they can stay in school until the normal time, bet the match is on in the hall, the only time the projector's used
gl3nnym Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 Yep we are closing at 2:45 and projecting it in the hall.
gibbo_ap Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 i have to set it up in the dining room, hall and several class rooms. stupid football.... its all men running round in shorts to me - i have no interest. It will mean the shops will be empty when i do my weeks shop tonight tho 1
gl3nnym Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 It will mean the shops will be empty when i do my weeks shop tonight tho I will be on the M25 driving home. Might get a bit excited if the road is empty and use 2 lanes at the same time :-p Crazy times!! 1
sidewinder Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 Whats the problem with it? I certainly wouldnt complain if they booted the kids out early, more peace, unfortunately they arnt here!
localzuk Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 No early close here. We've got a sports afternoon, and the staff are busy preparing for a faux ofsted inspection coming up. I've not even been asked to stick it on a projector anywhere...
tech_guy Posted June 23, 2010 Author Posted June 23, 2010 I'm hoping the roads are so empty tonight that I manage to drive the whole 25 miles without some lunatic trying to shunt me off the road for a change.
elsiegee40 Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 (edited) Regardless of my personal views about football (I'd rather watch the tennis myself!) I think schools have to be pragmatic about their charges and what is one of the most popular sports in the country. Non-Christians manage to go along with Christmas festivities in school; what's the difference? There is a fine line to be trodden between sticking to "work as usual" and making allowances for the fact that teenagers will vote with their feet, regardless of sanctions, to watch the game. As a school governor at a school that finishes at 3pm normally, we too had to make a decision. The match is being shown in the sports hall for all-comers; scarves, shirts and flags (but not vuvuzelas ) are allowed. Lessons will finish 5 minutes early and the students have a choice of going home or to the sports hall. I'll see my son about 5.30pm tonight! This will I hope guarantee, a pretty reasonable attendance today; though I will be interested to see the figures. As a governor, I cannot agree with the school closing very early - I think that this is unreasonable for the kids getting buses and for those reliant on parents. Five to fifteen minutes is neither here not there in my books. In businesses, I agree thater is a different problem. My senior manager husband has made it known that he has booked a half day holiday to watch the match. The advantages are a) he can see the game b) he's done it legitimately and giving his employees the right message c) he's not there to see people sloping off early! Edited June 23, 2010 by elsiegee40

I've not even been asked to stick it on a projector anywhere... My wife's school organised to close early a ways back and then Ofsted announced an inspection, but as all organised with letters home, etc... it's too late to turn back now... Given the head is probably sweating his job thanks to the total mess he's made of the school and staff moral I hope it's one more nail in his career coffin frankly.
ICT_GUY Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 First song on the radio this morning was footballs coming home. FYI it's not coming home, its been 44 years since we last won. To add insult to injury the song is pants and makes me want to cut my ears off with a rusty spoon.
creese Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 First song on the radio this morning was footballs coming home. No its not and the song is pants and makes me want to cut my ears off with a rusty spoon. It'll be the footballers coming home. 1
kevbaz Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 Brian Blessed's battle cry Slovenia v England Awesome! 1
Iain.Faulkner Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 We are not closing early, lessons are to continue right up until the end of the normal school day at 3.15. Staff have also been told that teaching should continue up until the end of the school day, so no streaming/watching/listening of football is permitted...in line with the council's statement that "learning is more important than football" and all schools are to operate as normal.....despite this, there are 6 secondary schools in the authority closing early, not sure how they're getting away with that.
LeMarchand Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 Don't you need a TV license to stream the game live via iPlayer?
kevbaz Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 yes.. we have a tv licence and a public broadcasting license
LeMarchand Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 yes.. we have a tv licence and a public broadcasting license That's what I thought - I don't think any of my schools have a TV license and they don't see anything wrong with ignoring this requirement.
nicholab Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 (edited) Why can't people just watch the highlights no other sport not even Murry playing at Wimbledon would get this kind of treatment!!! It a lot of fuss about some over paid men kicking round a bit of cow hide! Edited June 23, 2010 by nicholab 1
PEO Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 our TV ariel has broke... but i'm not aware of it yet 1
Jamman960 Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 We're putting it on in the theatre, the parents have been told that we'll release the pupils at at half time rather than 3:30
gl3nnym Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 our TV ariel has broke... but i'm not aware of it yet lol I like this.
Sirbendy Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 we've been asked to broadcast it through the building-wide AV matrix switcher from the sky box, to every smartboard and plasma in the building from 2.50pm. Then I've got to push it through to the SCION interlink into the AMX, and into the school theatre. Dear me.
Rydra Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 My view on it is, that the World cup is as much a festival as it is a competition. There are celebrations, ceremonies, lots of parties. I have seen my family more in the last 2 weeks than in the previous 6; they come to mine to watch the match. I personally dislike watching football. Breaking my collarbone at the age of 10 while playing for a youth team, and spending 6 months on the bench watching my mates play did that to me. BUT, I support my country, and enjoy the atmosphere. If I had the thousands required, I'd have gone to south africa and seen a couple of games. The world cup see's people of every colour, race, size, country and class, all together, having a good time. It has brought life and prosperity to a country that deserves it, and has put on one of the best world cups I have ever seen. Frankly, I'm for all schools promoting this. 3
