VMware vSphere 4 Update 2 released

The vSphere 4 Update 2 is available, plenty of changes (see release notes) but I'm happy to see official support for Ubuntu 10.4 and FT support for Intel 5600 processors.

I never noticed that Data Recovery 1.2 has also been released with vSphere 4U2

 

Data recovery is a backup to disk utility provided with VMware vSphere. Great on paper but failed to deliver reliable backups. You would forever get stalled backups and hung consistency checks, but for bundled in product it did save a few pence.

 

The change log looks like they have resolved many of the issues, so fingers crossed.

So how does this fit in with VMWare Consolidated backup?

Data Recovery is a standalone product, where VCB is desinged to integrate with your exsisting backup software (eg BackupExec). VCB will support larger VMware estates, Data Recovery only support 100 VM's per instance.

Future releases of VMware vCenter Server might not support installation on 32-bit Windows operating systems. VMware recommends installing vCenter Server on a 64-bit Windows operating system.

I installed this update on my ESXi Box (a HP ProLiant ML115), and keep getting Purple Screen of Death's, so I'd advise anyone with this ESXi box not to update yet.

Just out of curisotiy, if I perform a clean install of ESXi on one of my HDD's, will I still be able to access the data on the datastores when the reinstall is finished?

What's the best way to install the update? We have 4 ESX hosts and I don't want to update a host and then have it not available. Do you move all VM's on the host to another host and perfom the update?

Which version? If it was the HP CIM ESXi version, then it's always done that (although it can be fixed).

On a ML115 the HP version was guaranteed to give a PSOD just after boot due to some of the CIM agents not working with lower end HP boxes, thats the only reason I asked incase you were running the HP version.

ESX hosts ? do you have a shared SAN were the VM's are stored ? then you'll have no problem by placing 1 host in maintenacnce mode and upgrade/reinstall the os.

The fact that vCenter will only be installable on a 64bit OS in has been circulating or some time along with them dropping ESX completely in the next version in favor of ESXi which is more o a pain.

Oh and vCentre 4.1 isnt compatible with VMware Composer, so automatic provisioning of VMs wont work until View 4.5 is released.
