AWicher Posted June 7, 2010 Posted June 7, 2010 We are looking for some new server names but we tend to pick a TV or film and get names out of it. i.e Star Trek - so we have Voyager, Enterprise, DS9 Star Wars - OB1, R2, D2, 3PO and my latest personal favorite - Dune (Running Spiceworks) But with not much going on TV / Film wise we are finding it hard to make a few names up, and we all know a good name makes the server better. So, What have you got? and i will steal them
andydis Posted June 7, 2010 Posted June 7, 2010 at home my wireless is called DEATHSTAR, all servers are characters, e.g. luke ,yoda, darthvader, cheewie, hansolo, and pc's / laptops are r2d2, xwing, tieighter, my NAS is tatooine with a share of moseisley. . welcome to steal mine
glennda Posted June 7, 2010 Posted June 7, 2010 ours are all female names, it does make members of staff look really confused when you say oh dawns just crash! 1
AWicher Posted June 7, 2010 Author Posted June 7, 2010 Not only is tatooine a good name, but nice to know I'm not the only one who has a few servers at home (only 5 now), But we cant all be like Ric who i do believe has a server farm in multiple racks
maniac Posted June 7, 2010 Posted June 7, 2010 I'm boring here, and have a systematic labelling system e.g SA-DC01 = Spires Academy Domain Controller 01 etc. etc.
AWicher Posted June 7, 2010 Author Posted June 7, 2010 Oh, "favorite" staff names. there a good one. "Oh one min! just need to RE-BOOT "
Rydra Posted June 7, 2010 Posted June 7, 2010 Battlestar (fictional spaceship) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia # Galactica # Pegasus # Columbia (two battlestars bearing this name are known to have existed) # Atlantia # Triton # Valkyrie # Mercury # Solaria # Athena # Yashuman # Vortex (seen on a report given by Dualla to Gaeta during the attack) # Uned (seen on a report given by Dualla to Gaeta during the attack) # Erasmus (seen on a report on Adama's desk when searching for a new CAG) # Night Flight (seen on a report on Adama's desk when searching for a new CAG)
maark Posted June 7, 2010 Posted June 7, 2010 What about Disney characters? lol.. thats what my helpdesk person suggested so hers is now bambi :-) - just going over from simpsons to classic singers - aretha, dionne, otis etc
ChrisH Posted June 7, 2010 Posted June 7, 2010 Not that I use them but Red Dwarf names would be good.
K.C.Leblanc Posted June 7, 2010 Posted June 7, 2010 We used to be local place names, However since we've gone virtual it would get a bit too hard to manage. There's all serv and then a descriptor. E.g. ServDC1, ServPrinting, ServSims, A school I used to work at had servers called Daisy & Buttercup.
AWicher Posted June 7, 2010 Author Posted June 7, 2010 We have just picked HAL, TRON and Skynet as the main Blade OS name! Next would be the virtual servers needing names, oh its hard work this networking admin malarkey
AWicher Posted June 7, 2010 Author Posted June 7, 2010 Not that I use them but Red Dwarf names would be good. We did have Kryten and Kryten2 but they died a dreadful death (Busy, stressful day) so bad memories! as for Buttercup... hmmmm might not use that one, lol.
Ric_ Posted June 7, 2010 Posted June 7, 2010 Next would be the virtual servers needing names, oh its hard work this networking admin malarkey What's all this DNS nonsense? There's nothing wrong with using the IPv6 addresses
AWicher Posted June 7, 2010 Author Posted June 7, 2010 What's all this DNS nonsense? There's nothing wrong with using the IPv6 addresses Yeeee, ARPANET is the back to future now! lol
Sarconia Posted June 7, 2010 Posted June 7, 2010 Back in the old days... when I only had 3 devices which connected to the internet I used to call my PC's Melchior, Balthasar and Caspar - the names of the 3 wise men I still have those floating around although they have been joined by a bunch of random ones recently as my naming convention is failing, my PS3 is blackstormclaw, I've got an old laptop which is known as (rude word here)sandwich and numerous other devices floating round which I can't even remember what they're called.
webman Posted June 7, 2010 Posted June 7, 2010 Take your pick. At home I use elements - carbon, neon, titanium, mercury, zinc etc.
soveryapt Posted June 7, 2010 Posted June 7, 2010 If you've not got too many (and I realise this is kind of covered in my previous thought) how about the Seven Dwarfs.. Or if you're a fan of Christmas, then Santa's Reindeer..
oalcock Posted June 7, 2010 Posted June 7, 2010 At my old work, we had Galaxy, Mars (which were originally from the chocolate), then we called the next one Jupiter. I think its better with a more professional approach like we have at my place of work now with basic names (i.e. 1 word brief description of the server "Fileserve" for example).
soveryapt Posted June 7, 2010 Posted June 7, 2010 Have The Hobbit and LOTR been suggested yet? I can't remember ..
AWicher Posted June 7, 2010 Author Posted June 7, 2010 CLEO have an interesting naming convention - porkpie, Zuul, Fez, Cap, but to name a very few! But thanx for the ideas folks
PiqueABoo Posted June 7, 2010 Posted June 7, 2010 I once got away with: Alice, Bob, Chastity, Des, Eve,.. Mini-challenge: One of them is the odd one out (from an Evelyn Waugh novel I'd recently read)
leco Posted June 7, 2010 Posted June 7, 2010 My servers, and PCs for that matter are all named from League of Gentlemen. So I have Matthew and Pauline and Babs etc.
