Which NAS?

Can anyone recommend a NAS device thats around 1TB or more. Have previously used the Lacie 1TB big disk but this has gone faulty for the second time and is now out of warranty.

 

This is for a primary school so doesn't need all the bells and whistles

 

I should add that this NAS is just used for holding backups and nothing else!

Take a look at the QNAP range. I've not yet used one myself, but have heard good things about them recently.

 

Avoid the Netgear ReadyNAS line. I bought one for the exact same reason you are considering, and it has been affected by multiple firmware bugs in the last 6 months that have annoyed me considerably.

We use a QNAP TS-410 here, and despite a couple of niggles which I think (hope) are heat related, its very reliable and the web interface is extremely intuitive. We're looking into getting a second QNAP device, after having used a couple of Buffalo devices, which aren't as good in our opinion.

Never heard of or seen a QNAP before but I'd be willing to give one try if I can find one at a decent price.

I have had some problems with my Buffalos recently, but a string of rather good firmware updates have improved them no end. Pretty good devices now, Linkstation or Terastation. AD integration working too, for locked down access.

Eurgh, I've had misery with most LaCie devices I've ever had any contact with. The bufallo stuff's worth it though, we've got two terastations that work away happily, problem free.

I've only ever had 1 Lacie and didn't like it, don't have it anymore it went on ebay!

ive not had any problems with the readynas duos ive used (well i had 1 but that turned out to be the old server that even though turned off(soft off) when its network cable was in caused the new server to fail to talk to the nas cleanly though every other pc including the vm on the new server talked to it fine). Ive seen (but not tried) an lg one with a blueray writer in that supports iscsi and ad intergration that looks like it could be good but nobody will get me one in to play with and i cant justify a home nas

Got a pile of buffalos soon to become door stops, all of them now have HDD faults, slow NICs and generally pants A lot of money wasted tbh.

 

I have just fitted a couple of Netgear ReadyNAS unit in primarys and they have been very good and seem nice bits of kit for the money so would be worth considering

I second this, we have a couple of these and they are good pieces of kit, we've also got some slightly older Freecom Network Drive Pros which have been fairly reliable, one needs restarting periodically but it does get hammered.

I bought a Qnap TS219 for a primary school. Not bad unit and easy to set up.

The one I bought from misco was shipped with 1TB hard drive, I had to buy another to use the Qnap's raid facility.

Fitting a hard drive is easy using becauses of the Qnap's hot swap drive bays.

Its used for back up only, a 60GB backup takes approx 4 hours (not sure if this is good or bad, better then the old tape drive though)

have bought 2 qnaps recently TS419U and TS410 - for backup and other about to setup as clickview video storage.

Had no problems with them up to now - can enable microsoft networking and authenticate against domain.
